4chan Faces £450,000 Fine from Ofcom for Safety Failures

“Companies – wherever they’re based – are not allowed to sell unsafe toys to children in the UK,” stated Suzanne Cater, a representative of Ofcom, emphasizing the responsibility of digital platforms to ensure safety for younger users. “The digital world should be no different,” she added, highlighting the importance of stringent regulations in the online environment.

In a significant enforcement action, Ofcom has imposed a £450,000 fine on 4chan for failing to implement age checks designed to prevent children from accessing pornography on its site. This penalty reflects the growing scrutiny of online platforms under the UK Online Safety Act, which mandates that companies take proactive measures to eliminate illegal and harmful content.

In addition to the initial fine, Ofcom has levied an extra £50,000 penalty against 4chan for not adequately assessing the risks of users encountering illegal material. Furthermore, the platform faces a £20,000 fine for not clearly specifying in its terms of service how it protects users from illegal content.

Ofcom has set a deadline of April 2 for 4chan to implement necessary age assurance measures and conduct a comprehensive risk assessment. Failure to comply could result in daily penalties of £200, compounding the financial repercussions for the site.

Previously, 4chan was fined £20,000 for not responding to information requests from Ofcom, and it currently has outstanding penalties totaling £26,000 from last October, which it has yet to pay. Ofcom retains the authority to pursue recovery of these unpaid fines through the courts.

Ofcom’s investigation into 4chan began last June, prompted by complaints regarding illegal activity on the platform. The regulator’s actions underscore a commitment to enforcing the new duties imposed by the UK Online Safety Act, which aims to protect users, particularly children, from harmful online content.

As the situation develops, further enforcement actions may be anticipated if 4chan fails to meet the regulatory requirements set forth by Ofcom. The ongoing scrutiny of online platforms highlights the critical need for compliance with safety regulations in the digital landscape.
