Jack Colback Announces Retirement

Jack Colback has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The former midfielder made a significant impact during his career, culminating in 480 professional club appearances.

Colback’s career included notable stints at several clubs, with 135 appearances for Sunderland and 102 for Newcastle United. He also made 189 appearances in the Premier League across Sunderland, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest, scoring 9 goals and providing 11 assists.

In a statement, Colback expressed his gratitude, saying, “Today, I’m announcing my retirement from professional football. I feel privileged to have the honour of playing nearly 500 matches at the top level, representing some of the biggest clubs in the country in Newcastle, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Queen’s Park Rangers.”

Colback was part of the Sunderland squad that reached the Carabao Cup final in the 2013-14 season and played a key role in Newcastle United’s Championship title win in the 2016-17 season. He joined Nottingham Forest initially on loan before making a permanent transfer in 2020.

In the summer of 2023, Colback signed with Queens Park Rangers, where he made 53 appearances. Reflecting on his career, he noted, “There have been highs, lows, promotions, tough defeats, and moments I’ll never forget. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and supporters who helped me to achieve my dream. Looking forward to what the next chapter holds.”

Colback began his career with Sunderland, where he had a pair of loan spells with Ipswich Town, before completing a free transfer to Newcastle United in 2014 after leaving Sunderland.

He was also capped once by England’s under-20s in 2009 and was called up to the senior England squad in August 2014, although he withdrew due to injury.

As Colback steps away from the pitch, observers will be keen to see what the next chapter holds for him, as he transitions from a player to potentially exploring opportunities in coaching or punditry.
