Anfield welcomes Jeremy Jacquet in £60m move from Rennes
Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. The defender completes a move to Anfield for a fee reported as £60m. Jacquet, who is 20 years old, passed his medical on Deadline Day in February but remained with Rennes for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
The transfer fee for Jacquet includes an initial payment of £55m, with an additional £5m potentially payable in performance-related add-ons. He has signed a five-year contract with the club, which also includes an option for an additional year.
Jacquet expressed his enthusiasm about joining Liverpool, stating, “I feel really good, the first impressions are good and I am very happy to start here. I am very happy. When I see the facilities, I can see myself there. I feel good here and I am very excited to get started. For me it’s a big dream, it’s a big club. A club like Liverpool, it’s a big dream for me.”
The move to Liverpool comes after Jacquet suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the year. However, he has since completed a rehabilitation programme and is currently undertaking individual fitness work. He is expected to be available for the start of pre-season training under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Jacquet will join Liverpool’s first-team squad as one of the centre-back options. He will play alongside established defenders such as Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, as well as Geovanni Leoni. Leoni, whose first season at Anfield was impacted by an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained on his debut, is also anticipated to be fit for the start of pre-season.
Competition for Signature
Liverpool secured Jacquet’s signature despite interest from other prominent European clubs. Reports indicate that Chelsea offered an identical deal to Liverpool for the player, while Bayern Munich also showed interest. Jacquet ultimately chose to move to Anfield.
The acquisition of Jacquet aligns with Liverpool’s strategy of identifying and recruiting emerging elite talent. The club has focused on lowering the average age of their first-team squad, with the average age of their first-team signings over the last two transfer windows being lower than 22.
French football expert Julien Laurens described Jacquet as “the real deal,” drawing comparisons to players like William Saliba and Wesley Fofana when they first emerged. Laurens noted Jacquet’s impressive performances last season after returning from a loan spell in the second division.
European football expert Kevin Hatchard also commented on Jacquet, identifying him as a rising star who has captained numerous youth groups for France. Hatchard highlighted Jacquet’s attributes as a modern centre-back, including his ability on the ball, passing range, athleticism, and aerial prowess. However, Hatchard also noted that Jacquet does not have an extensive record in top-level football.
Jacquet’s former coach, Habib Beye, reportedly stated that letting the defender go during the season would necessitate downgrading the club’s goals for the season, underscoring his importance to Rennes.
Pre-Season Preparations
Jacquet, a France Under-21s international, came through the Rennes academy. He made 33 appearances for the French Ligue 1 side before his move to Liverpool.
Liverpool players are scheduled to return on 14 July before travelling to the US on 20 July for a pre-season tour.
The club confirmed the transfer has been completed subject to international clearance.
