Apple iOS 26.4 Age Verification Requires Users to Confirm They Are 18 or Older

“Adults will have to confirm that they’re 18 or older to use certain services or features, or take certain actions on their account,” stated Apple regarding its latest iOS 26.4 update. This new requirement, effective from March 25, 2026, mandates that iPhone users in the UK verify their age to access specific services.

To comply, users can either present a credit card or scan an ID. This measure is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing online safety for children, a move welcomed by Ofcom, which described it as a ‘real win for children and families.’

Notably, Apple’s age verification system is considered a first for a European market, reflecting the company’s commitment to child safety online. If users already possess an Apple account, the company may utilize a linked payment method for age verification.

In the absence of age confirmation, Apple will automatically activate child safety protections on accounts, ensuring that minors are shielded from inappropriate content. The UK is set to be among the first countries to implement these new child safety measures on devices.

While the iOS 26.4 update introduces significant changes, it also includes additional features such as AI-generated playlists and a concert discovery tool. However, a recent issue arose when a message suggesting age verification was required to download apps was displayed in error, as clarified by Apple spokesperson Peter Ajemian.

Despite these advancements, some users have expressed frustration. A Reddit user remarked, “Myself and everyone I know (wife, friends, family, colleagues, etc) are doing everything to bypass these overreaching age checks.”

This update comes amid increasing pressure on technology companies from the UK government to enhance protections for children online. The government is currently trialing a program involving 300 teens to compare experiences with social app usage restrictions.

While the Online Safety Act does not extend to Apple’s App Store and operating system, the company’s proactive measures signal a significant shift in how digital platforms approach age verification and child safety.
