Axolotl: Ten-Year-Old Discovers Rare in Welsh River

A ten-year-old girl named Evie Hill made a remarkable discovery by finding a Mexican axolotl in the River Ogmore, Bridgend. This rare creature, measuring 22 centimeters (about 9 inches) in length, was located under a discarded mat.

Evie exclaimed, “I lifted it up, I saw an axolotl and shouted ‘there’s an axolotl!'” Her find is significant as it represents the first documented sighting of an axolotl in the UK.

The axolotl, affectionately named Dippy, had injuries to its tail and stomach—likely from a predator. Wild axolotls are critically endangered, with estimates suggesting that only between 50 and 1,000 remain globally. These creatures are native to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City.

Evie’s mother, Melanie Hill, expressed her astonishment: “You can imagine my surprise; I couldn’t believe it.” The family is now faced with questions about Dippy’s future and how to care for this unique animal.

Axolotls are popular pets known for their extraordinary regenerative abilities; they can regenerate tissue and even grow a new spinal cord within a new tail. However, it is illegal to release them into the wild due to concerns over ecological impact.
