Painted around 1598, the portrait was attributed to Caravaggio in 1963 after being authenticated by art critic Roberto Longhi. This acquisition is part of a broader initiative to strengthen Italy’s national cultural heritage.

The portrait portrays Barberini in his 30s, dressed as a cleric, and employs chiaroscuro, a technique renowned for its dramatic use of light and shadow. Caravaggio completed only a handful of portraits before his death in 1610, making this work particularly significant.

The deed of purchase was signed in the presence of Minister Alessandro Giuli, who remarked, “This is a work of exceptional importance.” He noted that the extraordinary masterpiece had been acquired by the state after more than a year of negotiations.

The painting will enter the permanent collection at Palazzo Barberini, where it was publicly displayed for the first time in November 2024. The portrait had been in the collection of the noble Barberini family for centuries before passing into private hands.

Experts have highlighted the painting as one of the founding moments of modern portraiture, further solidifying Caravaggio’s influence on the art world. In total, 5 or 6 experts examined the painting before its public unveiling.

As the acquisition process continues, Minister Giuli stated, “The acquisition will continue to pursue in the coming months.” This indicates that further efforts to enhance Italy’s cultural assets are underway.
