Chang Bingyu’s Earnings Amid Match-Fixing Ban

Chang Bingyu earned £172,000 from the World Championship qualifying, despite a ban for match-fixing that has overshadowed his recent performances.

He reached the third stage of qualifying, where he narrowly lost 10-8 to Luca Brecel. During this stage, Chang produced a remarkable 147 maximum break, which is the highest possible score in a single frame of snooker.

His earnings included a £147,000 bonus for achieving two maximum breaks in the season’s Triple Crown events and an additional £15,000 for having the highest break at the World Championship.

Chang faced a 20-month ban due to his involvement in a match-fixing scandal that implicated ten Chinese players. His suspension expired in December 2024.

After returning from his ban, Chang won the Asia-Pacific Championship and was runner-up in the 2025 Scottish Open. Shaun Murphy praised his performance during recent matches, stating, “That was as good as anything I’ve ever witnessed in my 35 years playing snooker.” Murphy emphasized that such performances would be highlighted if they came from top players like Ronnie O’Sullivan or Judd Trump.

The match-fixing scandal involved serious allegations; Chang admitted to fixing a match at the 2022 British Open under pressure from Liang Wenbo. The incident led to lifetime bans for Liang Wenbo and Li Hang.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges within professional snooker and raises questions about integrity in sports. Observers are keen to see how Chang’s career progresses following his return and whether he can maintain his form amid scrutiny.
