Chelsea agree record £117m deal for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of England midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new club record for Chelsea and also marks a new transfer record for an English player. Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
The transfer fee surpasses the previous record for an English player, which was £116m paid by Manchester City to Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. For Chelsea, Rogers’ acquisition exceeds the £107m spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an additional option for a further year. This signing comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is actively shaping his squad in preparation for the upcoming Premier League season.
Impact on Chelsea and Aston Villa
The acquisition of Morgan Rogers by Chelsea is seen as a significant statement of intent, particularly after the club finished in 10th place in the Premier League last season, missing out on European football. Despite this, the move suggests that Stamford Bridge remains an appealing destination for some of the league’s top talents, especially considering Arsenal had also targeted Rogers.
Rogers, who previously played for Manchester City‘s academy, joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee of £8m, potentially rising to £15m. Due to a sell-on clause, Middlesbrough is set to receive at least £20.4m from this transfer, potentially making it an English record for a transfer sell-on fee. Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Aston Villa and was part of the squad that secured the Europa League title last season.

For Aston Villa, Rogers’ departure follows Youri Tielemans‘ £35m move to Manchester United earlier in the week. However, Villa have brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal exceeding £50m and are also reportedly targeting Wolves‘ Joao Gomes for £38m.
Rogers’ Role and Managerial Influence
The arrival of Morgan Rogers raises questions about his integration into Chelsea‘s squad and the potential impact on key players like Cole Palmer. Both players progressed through Manchester City‘s academy together and are known to be close friends. Rogers was selected for Thomas Tuchel‘s World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense, highlighting similarities in their playing styles.
New manager Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in convincing Rogers to join Chelsea, promising him regular starts on the left wing. This position has seen challenges due to Alejandro Garnacho‘s form and Jamie Gittens‘ injury issues. Rogers primarily operated as a number 10 for Aston Villa but acknowledges that Cole Palmer has established himself in that role at Chelsea.

Alonso‘s tactical approach remains under scrutiny, as he has utilized both a back four and a back five at his previous clubs, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. Rogers and Palmer are both versatile attackers capable of playing in various positions and will compete for playing time with other forwards, including Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda. Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly being sold to accommodate these new additions, creating a competitive environment for places in the squad for a team playing only one game per week next season.
Transfer Strategy and Future Implications
Chelsea‘s swift action in securing Morgan Rogers, who was also a primary target for Arsenal, demonstrates the club’s aggressive transfer strategy. Despite Aston Villa being under no pressure to sell, with Rogers having extended his contract until 2031 and the prospect of Champions League football, Chelsea‘s offer proved decisive. This move underscores the assurances likely given to Xabi Alonso regarding backing in the transfer market when he took the managerial position.
Rogers is the seventh former Manchester City youth player to join Chelsea since the new ownership, with these signings reportedly overseen by Chelsea‘s co-director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields, who previously worked at Manchester City. Rogers has made 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in seven games at this summer’s World Cup.

Rogers, who is 23 years old, scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 55 appearances for Aston Villa last season. He also provided an assist to Anthony Gordon during England‘s semi-final defeat to Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
