Eilish McColgan Finishes 7th in London Marathon Despite Injury
Eilish McColgan finished the London Marathon in 7th place, despite suffering a severe foot injury that left her foot covered in blood. She completed the race with a time of 2:24:51, which is just 26 seconds slower than her personal best set last year.
Halfway through the race, she experienced a blister that felt as if her foot had ‘exploded.’ This injury occurred around the 24-mile mark, significantly impacting her performance. “Just not long after halfway, I had a really, really bad blister in my foot,” McColgan explained. “It sounds strange saying it, but the only way I can say it is I felt like my foot just exploded.”
In addition to her individual struggle, McColgan was the top British finisher in this elite women’s race. Her performance earned her gold medals at both the British and Scottish levels. This achievement adds to her impressive resume as a four-time Olympian.
The London Marathon showcased remarkable performances overall. Weynay Ghebresilasie set a new Scottish record in the men’s race with an incredible time of 2:06:59. Meanwhile, Sebastian Sawe broke the world record with a time of 1:59:30—an extraordinary feat that overshadowed many individual stories.
Despite the ideal conditions for racing, McColgan’s injury raised questions about how she managed to maintain such a competitive pace under duress. “I just started to hurt in different areas then as well,” she noted. “So I don’t know if I’m like running funny through it, I assume.” This admission reflects the mental and physical challenges elite athletes face during high-stakes events.
McColgan’s mother, Liz McColgan, is also a celebrated runner, adding another layer of significance to Eilish’s achievements in Scottish athletics. Yet, while she earned accolades this time around, McColgan expressed disappointment in how her body held up during the marathon: “I’m just disappointed with how my body sort of held up there.”
This marathon serves as an important milestone for McColgan as she continues to navigate her career amidst injuries and expectations. The next steps for her remain uncertain; however, she has shown remarkable tenacity and skill throughout her journey.
