Hugh Bonneville Rules Out Return to Paddington Cinematic Universe

Hugh Bonneville has ruled out a return to the Paddington Cinematic Universe as Mr. Brown, a decision that comes as the franchise gears up for the release of Paddington in Peru on April 1, 2026.

The upcoming film follows Paddington as he returns to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy, only to discover that she has gone missing. Paddington teams up with the Brown family to search for her, continuing the beloved bear’s adventures.

Bonneville, who has been part of the Paddington franchise since the first film in 2014, expressed his sentiments about stepping away from the role, stating, “I don’t think so. I really don’t. I’ve loved it, but I’m getting on a bit.” He further commented, “It’s a younger man’s job, but you can get other actors in and it will work just as well, because it’s all about the bear.”

The film is directed by Dougal Wilson and is set to premiere on Sky Cinema and NOW. Bonneville appeared in the first Paddington movie in 2014 and its sequels in 2017 and 2024.

In addition to Paddington in Peru, a fourth Paddington film has been confirmed, as announced by Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh. She stated, “There will be a fourth film. We’re thinking about the next movies and we’re working on a new TV series as well as the stage show musical with Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley.”

As the Paddington franchise continues to expand, Bonneville’s absence marks a significant change for the series. His portrayal of Mr. Brown has been a cornerstone of the films, contributing to their charm and appeal.

While fans may be disappointed by Bonneville’s decision, the franchise’s future appears bright with new projects in the pipeline. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific roles other actors will take in the upcoming films.
