Iraola’s Stance on Jones’ Future
Iraola’s Stance on Jones’ Future
Andoni Iraola, the new head coach for Liverpool, has expressed his desire for midfielder Curtis Jones to remain at the club. Iraola confirmed he plans to engage in discussions with Jones to clarify his future, particularly in light of transfer interest from Inter Milan. The Italian club has reportedly made two offers for Jones, both of which have been rejected by Liverpool.
The most recent proposal from Inter Milan, submitted last month, was reportedly significantly lower than Liverpool’s valuation of the player. Liverpool values Jones at £34 million, and while they are open to negotiations, they have indicated they will not sanction a sale for less than £30 million. Inter Milan, on the other hand, is understood to believe a figure of £21 million represents fair value, especially given that Jones has just 12 months remaining on his current contract with Liverpool.
Iraola emphasised his high regard for Jones, stating, “I rate Curtis very highly. For me he is a great, great player and I hope he can continue with us and continue performing the way he has been performing.” He also highlighted Jones’ local connection to the club, noting, “It’s very important that he’s Scouse, that he’s from here. I also like the personality.”
Jones Considers Options Amid Interest
Curtis Jones, who is from the city centre, has been evaluating his options, reportedly seeking more consistent game time. Last season, under former manager Arne Slot, Jones made 18 starts in the league, with some of these appearances being out of his preferred position, specifically at right-back. This situation has reportedly led Jones to consider a move.
Sources suggest that Jones is encouraged by Inter Milan’s persistent interest. He is said to appreciate that the Nerazzurri have continued to pursue him despite previous rejections and is reportedly open to a transfer to the San Siro this summer. While Jones is prepared to compete for his place under Iraola at Liverpool, he reportedly believes his prospects of becoming a regular starter are greater in Milan.
Inter Milan is expected to increase their offer to around £25 million and could potentially go higher if necessary. However, there is reportedly a reluctance from Inter Milan to meet Liverpool’s £30 million asking price. The situation leaves Liverpool with a significant decision regarding the midfielder’s future.
Liverpool’s Midfield Strategy
Liverpool’s current stance on their midfield options is clear. The club is reportedly comfortable with their existing midfield personnel if Jones remains at Anfield. As such, signing another central midfielder is not currently considered a priority for the club.
However, the situation would change if Jones were to depart before the transfer window closes. Should he leave, Liverpool is expected to enter the market to secure a replacement. This indicates that the club’s transfer activity in the midfield will largely depend on the outcome of the discussions with Jones and any further bids from Inter Milan.
Iraola, who signed a two-year contract last month after replacing Arne Slot, reflected on the nature of managing a club. He noted the high turnover of managers in the Premier League, with approximately half of the league’s teams changing managers from last season to this season. His focus remains on building a strong team that fans can connect with and be proud of.
The new head coach plans to speak with Curtis Jones to try and convince him that his future lies on Merseyside.
