Madueke discusses World Cup aspirations and DR Congo challenge

Noni Madueke, a winger for England, is competing in his first World Cup and has expressed his ambition for the team to secure a major title. England is set to face DR Congo in the first knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to the media, Madueke described his participation in the tournament as a dream come true and conveyed his gratitude for the opportunity. He highlighted the achievement of the initial objective in the group stages and stated his anticipation for the upcoming knockout matches. He emphasised the need for top players to possess confidence in their abilities on such a significant stage.

Anticipating a challenging encounter

The upcoming match against DR Congo is expected to be a difficult one. Madueke anticipates that the African nation will present a resilient and well-disciplined challenge, potentially employing a defensive strategy similar to that of Ghana, who held England to a goalless draw during the group stages. He noted that many teams find it challenging to break down opposition formations that pack 11 players into a small area of the pitch, a tactic that has caused difficulties for other top nations as well.

Madueke stressed that at this stage of the World Cup, no opponent can be underestimated. He acknowledged that DR Congo possesses its own strengths and qualities, ensuring a tough contest. He expects England to be prepared from the outset.

DR Congo, known as Zaire in 1974, is making its first appearance in the knockout stages of the World Cup after a 52-year absence. Under coach Sebastien Desabre, the team has shown significant improvement, including a fourth-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Their defensive solidity is a key strength, demonstrated by 29 clean sheets in 57 games under Desabre. They also utilise swift counter-attacks, leveraging players like Cedric Bakambu and Yoane Wissa.

The team’s mental resilience has also improved, forged during a protracted qualifying campaign that included three play-off matches. DR Congo secured their spot in the last 32 by drawing 1-1 with Portugal and beating Uzbekistan 3-1, after an initial loss to Colombia.

Competition and confidence within the squad

England benefits from significant squad depth, particularly in attack. Manager Thomas Tuchel has frequently rotated his players during the group stages, highlighting the array of talent available. Madueke has been part of this rotation, making two starts and one substitute appearance in the tournament.

He believes this healthy competition is beneficial, stating that playing for clubs like Arsenal and for England naturally demands the highest level of performance. Madueke has been competing for playing time with his club teammate, Bukayo Saka, a situation he embraces. He explained that this dynamic does not negatively affect their relationship, as both players desire the best for each other, understanding that individual success contributes to the team’s overall chances of winning.

Madueke also reflected on the confidence gained from recent club success, noting that carrying the winning feeling from a Premier League title into a major tournament like the World Cup is a significant boost. During his press conference, he also commented on Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner for Brazil, expressing happiness for his club teammate while jokingly hoping they do not face Brazil in the tournament.

The match against DR Congo is scheduled for Wednesday at 5pm UK time.
