Parachute: Largest Drop in the UK in Over a Decade

More than 270 members of the Army and the RAF participated in the largest military parachute drop in the UK for over a decade on March 30, 2026. Soldiers jumped from an altitude of 800 feet, marking a significant demonstration of military capability.

The operation featured four waves of 69 paratroopers each, dropped from A400M Atlas transport aircraft. In total, 24 tonnes of weapons, ammunition, and food were delivered during the exercise, highlighting the logistical capabilities of the forces involved.

This parachute drop is the largest in the UK since 2015, reflecting a renewed focus on airborne operations. The A400M has taken over as the military’s low-level parachuting aircraft following the retirement of the C-130 in 2023, showcasing advancements in military technology.

Troops can deploy a company of about 200 to 300 paratroopers within approximately two days, while almost an entire battlegroup, roughly 1,000 troops, can be deployed within five days. The bulk of a brigade, about 5,000 soldiers, can be mobilized within about 20 days, underscoring the rapid response capabilities of the British military.

The exercise involved soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment, and was part of a routine training initiative aimed at rebuilding parachuting capabilities amid growing global threats. L/Cpl Robin Nichols remarked, “It was quite an exciting time, you could feel it in the hangar this morning, the tension, a little bit.”

Brigadier Ed Cartwright, who participated in the drop, noted, “Not my best landing ever, but I’m down, I’m safe, I’m not broken.” He further emphasized the importance of maintaining military readiness, stating, “It’s a dangerous world and we need to give our policymakers and government options to do things about that.”

Cartwright also highlighted the unique advantage of parachuting, saying, “Parachuting is the only capability that puts troops on the ground almost anywhere in the world, at speed and at reach.” This exercise serves as a reminder of the strategic importance of airborne forces in modern military operations.
