Roger Speed has passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of support for Welsh football and fond memories of his son, Gary Speed, a celebrated footballer and manager.
Roger was the father of Gary Speed, who earned 85 caps for Wales and played for notable clubs including Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers, and Sheffield United. Tragically, Gary Speed took his own life on November 27, 2011, at the age of 42, a loss that deeply affected the football community.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) expressed their sorrow in a statement, describing Roger Speed as an “incredible supporter of Welsh football.” They highlighted his passion for the game and his significant contributions to the sport.
Roger Speed was also recognized as an Honorary Patron of Connah’s Quay Nomads, a club that paid tribute to him following the news of his passing. The club stated, “It is with great sadness that the club has overnight learned of the passing of the great Roger Speed who was an Honorary Patron to the club and long-time supporter as well as the father of legendary Welsh player and Manager, Gary Speed.”
Gary Speed’s football career was marked by remarkable achievements, including winning the League Championship with Leeds United in 1992. He played a total of 841 matches at the club level, scoring 135 goals and making 535 appearances in the Premier League.
Roger Speed’s family includes his wife Carol and their children, who are now left to cherish his memory. Carol Speed remarked on the importance of mental health awareness, reflecting on the struggles that can often go unnoticed, saying, “I think it’s a fantastic idea. We didn’t know that Gary was struggling, people don’t always know what’s going on in people’s minds.”
The FAW concluded their statement by affirming that Welsh football holds Gary Speed deeply in its heart, and that Roger’s support and passion for the game will always be remembered.
