Arsenal closing in on deal for Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa

Arsenal are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa. The Premier League champions are seeking defensive reinforcements due to injuries sidelining both William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.

Konsa, an England international, is considered a key target for Arsenal due to his versatility, being able to play both as a centre-back and at right-back. He has been on Arsenal’s target list throughout the summer transfer window.

Negotiations and Player Profile

Reports indicate that discussions between Arsenal and Aston Villa are progressing, with dialogue at the ownership level aimed at bridging the valuation gap for the defender. Konsa recently rejoined Villa for pre-season training after an extended break following the World Cup.

Konsa was a significant part of England’s squad that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup this summer. He started every match until the 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the last-four stage, where he entered as a 72nd-minute substitute. During the tournament, he often played in central defence but also covered at right-back after Jarell Quansah’s two-match suspension.

The defender has been a consistent presence in Unai Emery’s Villa squad, which has competed at the top of the Premier League and in European competitions. Last season, he made 48 appearances across all competitions as Villa secured the Europa League title and finished fourth in the Premier League. In the 2024-25 campaign, Konsa started all but one of Villa’s Champions League fixtures, with the team reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.

Since his move from Brentford in 2019, Konsa has made 286 appearances for Aston Villa. He currently has two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed in September 2023.

Manager’s Perspective and Squad Needs

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his desire to strengthen the squad, particularly in defence, given the current injury situation. Speaking after Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City, Arteta stated, “We want to improve and evolve the squad. In order to do that we have detected some areas that can be strengthened and that is what we are trying to do.”

The interest in Konsa follows a summer-long pursuit by Arsenal, prompted by Saliba’s back injury. While Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White could provide cover at centre-back, Timber’s ongoing recovery from a groin injury has made defensive reinforcements a more urgent matter. Timber has not started a game since March and underwent minor surgery last month, while Saliba is expected to miss the initial months of the campaign due to a back injury that emerged during the World Cup.

The decision to pursue Konsa, an experienced Premier League player, may signal Arteta’s serious approach to Arsenal’s title defence. Dean Smith, who signed Konsa for both Brentford and Aston Villa, highlighted Konsa’s strengths as being “really calm on the ball and his one-v-one defending is outstanding.”

Arsenal had an initial offer, believed to be around £30m, rejected earlier this month, with Villa reportedly seeking £60m. However, talks at the ownership level appear to have narrowed the valuation gap.

Impact on Aston Villa

Should Konsa depart, it would mark another significant exit for Aston Villa this summer. The club has already seen Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne leave, and the future of goalkeeper Emi Martinez is uncertain. Additionally, forward Ollie Watkins has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia.

Unai Emery has guided Villa to a new level since taking over four years ago, largely with a core group of players. The potential departure of Konsa would mean a significantly altered Villa squad as they prepare to commence the new Premier League season this weekend.

Arsenal have already strengthened their midfield and attack with the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis.
