Stephen Fleming appointed England Men’s Test coach with Joe Root returning as captain
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the England Men’s Test Head Coach, with Joe Root returning to the role of captain. Fleming, who has an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings, is highly regarded in the cricket world.
Fleming’s coaching career includes leading CSK to five Indian Premier League titles and reaching the final 10 times. He also guided Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men’s competition in 2023 and has coached affiliate teams for CSK in South Africa and the USA, as well as the Melbourne Stars. As a player, he was New Zealand’s longest-serving Test captain, leading in 80 Tests and securing 28 wins. He also played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he captained Notts to a County Championship title in 2005.
Root’s Return to Captaincy
Joe Root will resume his role as England Men’s Test captain, a position he previously held from 2017-2022. He holds the record for captaining England Men in the most Test matches, with 65 Tests, and achieving the most wins, with 27 victories. Root temporarily took on the captaincy earlier this summer at the Kia Oval during the Rothesay Test Series against New Zealand.
Root expressed his honour at being asked to captain again, highlighting the rewarding nature of the job. He looks forward to leading the next generation of players alongside Fleming, whom he describes as an exceptional leader with extensive knowledge of the game.
However, the decision to reappoint Root has drawn criticism from some quarters. Former England batter Mark Butcher described it as a “retrograde step” for the Test side. Butcher noted that Root’s original tenure ended with only one victory in his final 17 matches as skipper. He suggested that Root’s batting performance improved after stepping down from the captaincy in 2022, a period when Root himself stated his relationship with the role had become “very unhealthy” due to the “toll” it took.
The ECB’s decision comes amidst a shortage of options, particularly after Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket. Harry Brook, Stokes’ vice-captain and England’s limited-overs skipper, was considered the only other credible alternative to Root. The appointment was also made under time pressure, with England set to begin a three-match Test series against Pakistan.
Fleming’s Vision and Partnership
Stephen Fleming will commence his role after the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan. During this series, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach. Fleming plans to fly to the UK later this summer to prepare for the South Africa Test tour, following time spent with his family in New Zealand after his departure from CSK.
Fleming expressed his excitement about joining England as Test Coach, calling it one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He aims to build on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, focusing on both immediate wins and the long-term development of the team. He specifically mentioned working with Joe Root as captain and supporting Harry Brook in developing his talent and leadership.
Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, believes Fleming is the ideal person to guide the team and transform its potential into a world-class unit. He highlighted Fleming’s respected status in cricket and his ability to achieve and sustain success. Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, echoed these sentiments, praising Fleming’s proven track record in building winning environments.
Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull described Fleming’s appointment as fantastic, anticipating an exceptional coach-captain partnership with Root. Doull noted Fleming’s structured and methodical approach to the game, combined with innovation, as evidenced by his success in T20 cricket. He believes Fleming’s return to red-ball cricket will provide what England needs following Brendon McCullum’s tenure.
The three-match Test series between England and Pakistan is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 19, at Headingley.
