A zoo employee at Asahiyama Zoo allegedly confessed on April 29, 2026, to disposing of his wife’s body in the facility’s incinerator. This revelation has triggered a nationwide investigation and led to the indefinite closure of one of Japan’s most popular zoos.

The employee, a man in his 30s, faces arrest on suspicion of illegally dumping his wife’s body. She had been reported missing since late March 2026. The Hokkaido prefectural police are currently conducting forensic investigations, which include searching both the zoo’s incinerator and the employee’s home.

The incident has raised significant concerns regarding domestic violence and workplace isolation in northern Japan. Hirosuke Imazu, an official from the zoo, described the decision to postpone its reopening as “painful”. He emphasized that a zoo exists to be seen by visitors, highlighting the impact of this incident.

Asahiyama Zoo is known for its behavioral exhibits and typically attracts over 1.33 million visitors annually. The zoo was originally closed for renovations before this tragic event unfolded. Now, with its closure expected to last until May 2026, it faces an estimated revenue loss of 150 million JPY.

During the Golden Week holidays—a peak tourist season—the mayor of Asahikawa expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to visitors. The community is left grappling with the fallout from this shocking incident.

Forensic teams are currently sifting through ash and bone fragments from the incinerator as part of their investigation. This case has not only affected the zoo’s reputation but also raised broader questions about safety and domestic issues within families.

Investigation Update

“We believe this is the best chance to identify the male as this image can be distributed throughout the UK and abroad in our efforts to identify him,” said Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting, who is leading the investigation into the unidentified man found at Claerwen Reservoir on October 17, 2024.

The body was discovered wearing only a wetsuit, with no identifiable marks or clothing. Authorities estimate that the man had been in the water for up to 12 weeks before his discovery. He is described as being between 30 and 60 years old, approximately 6 feet tall, and weighing between 202 and 220 pounds.

The investigation has been ongoing for over 16 months with no significant leads. The police have utilized various resources, including a low-flying helicopter, drones, and officers scouring the water’s edge in their search for answers.

Detective Inspector Ponting noted the unusual circumstances surrounding the case, stating, “It’s really unusual.” The man’s cause of death remains unconfirmed after an inconclusive post-mortem examination.

In an effort to identify the man, forensic experts from Liverpool John Moores University and Face Lab created a facial reconstruction using photographs, a post-mortem report, a forensic dental report, and a CT scan. The man was found to have an unusual dental pattern identified as an open bite.

Authorities have made public appeals and searched medical databases and missing persons cases, but details remain unconfirmed regarding how the man ended up in the reservoir.

Professor Caroline Wilkinson, involved in the forensic analysis, remarked, “Forensic cases are always really sad,” highlighting the emotional weight of such investigations.

As the investigation continues, police remain hopeful that the facial reconstruction will aid in identifying the man, with plans to distribute the image widely.

Detective Inspector Ponting emphasized the importance of public assistance, stating, “If they need our help, it generally means that it’s a difficult case to identify.” The community is encouraged to come forward with any information that may assist in the ongoing investigation.
