Jet2 has confirmed a zero-surcharge policy on all booked flights and holidays, making it a significant player in the travel industry. This announcement comes amidst rising fuel costs driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has caused jet fuel prices to surge dramatically worldwide.

The new policy applies to all bookings across every distribution channel, including independent travel agents. Customers can now book their holidays knowing they will not face unexpected surcharges later—this assurance is crucial as many airlines have recently introduced emergency surcharges due to increased operational costs.

While Jet2 has never previously applied surcharges, this commitment marks a definitive shift in their pricing strategy. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, stated, “Holidaymakers should have every right to book their hard-earned break in the sun without worrying about being hit with additional costs.” This sentiment resonates strongly with travelers who are increasingly cautious about hidden fees.

Despite the zero-surcharge guarantee, it is important to note that tourist taxes will still apply. These remain payable directly in resort to accommodation providers. This means that while Jet2 eliminates additional booking fees, travelers should still budget for these necessary expenses.

Moreover, Jet2holidays continues to offer a £60 per person deposit and flexible payment options, making holiday planning more accessible. Customers booking with Jet2 can feel confident that they are locking in their price without additional cost surprises later—a move that Heapy believes is the right thing to do for customers.

Jet2 remains proactive in managing its fuel supply situation. They are in continual contact with their fuel suppliers regarding availability and costs. However, the uncertainty surrounding global fuel prices remains a concern for all carriers.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions have forced many airlines worldwide to reconsider their pricing structures. The disruption to production and transport has led carriers to introduce measures aimed at mitigating rising costs. Yet, Jet2’s decision stands out as an industry-leading pledge during these turbulent times.

As travelers look ahead to their holiday plans, Jet2’s commitment could influence booking behaviors across the sector. With rising fuel prices affecting many airlines’ operations, Jet2’s approach may attract more customers seeking stability in pricing.

A fire at Viva Energy’s Corio facility in Geelong burned for 13 hours before being extinguished. This incident is significant as the refinery processes 120,000 barrels of oil per day and supplies 10 percent of Australia’s total fuel. The blaze was contained to the Mogas section, which produces motor gasoline.

On the same day, April 16, Ukrainian drones struck the Tuapse Oil Refinery in Russia, one of the ten largest oil refineries globally. The Tuapse facility has a processing capacity of about 12 million tons of petroleum products per year and plays a crucial role in supplying the Russian military with fuel.

The fire at the Geelong refinery raises concerns about fuel availability in Australia—especially since six oil tankers scheduled for April delivery have been canceled. Professor Sajid Anwar highlighted that this fire represents a critical stress test for Australia’s energy resilience.

The impact on petrol supplies is still uncertain. Chris Bowen remarked, “This is not a positive development, but obviously there’s a long way to go in terms of working out just what the impact is.” Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of the fire on petrol supplies.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the fire at Tuapse intensified and spread to neighboring reservoirs. In this drone strike, two children were killed among a total of four casualties reported.

Experts suggest that while production of jet fuel and diesel continues, the halt in petrol production indicates that the fire is affecting areas where hydrocarbons are chemically modified for higher octane ratings. Professor Ian Rae commented on these operational specifics.

This sequence of events matters significantly for both Australian and Russian energy sectors. Australia has reduced its domestic refining capacity over recent decades, increasing reliance on imported refined fuels. As such, incidents like these can have ripple effects across supply chains and pricing.

The situation remains fluid as investigations into both fires are ongoing. The exact cause of the fire at Geelong is still under investigation as well.
