EasyJet warned of a bigger half-year pre-tax loss of between £540 million and £560 million due to rising fuel costs. This alarming figure highlights the financial strain that the airline is under as it grapples with soaring expenses.

The global aviation industry is facing significant turbulence following a dramatic surge in jet fuel prices. Prices have skyrocketed from approximately $85 to $90 per barrel to between $150 and $200 per barrel. This increase reflects broader geopolitical tensions, particularly the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Currently, Europe has around six weeks of jet fuel supply left, according to energy experts. Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, indicated that flight cancellations will begin soon if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

EasyJet’s CEO Kenton Jarvis stated, “We have visibility to the middle of May” regarding fuel supplies. However, this assurance may not be enough if conditions worsen.

In contrast, Ryanair’s fuel suppliers can guarantee supply until mid-end May. Yet, Ryanair also cautioned that if the closure of the Hormuz Straits continues into May or June, they cannot rule out risks to fuel supplies.

The situation remains fluid and uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed about how many flights may be affected or how passenger travel plans will change in the coming weeks.

Despite these challenges, EasyJet’s CEO noted that pricing remains competitive during this crisis. This statement suggests a strategic approach to maintain customer interest amid rising operational costs.

The implications for travelers could be significant. With just four weeks’ warning for passengers potentially facing cancellations or delays, planning becomes increasingly challenging.

This crisis underscores how interconnected global events impact local industries—especially in aviation where every dollar counts.

As observers watch closely, the next few weeks will be critical for both EasyJet and the broader aviation sector. The stakes are high as they navigate this turbulent landscape.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially resumed its London flight operations after a six-year hiatus, with the inaugural flight, PK-785, departing from Islamabad carrying 325 passengers. This resumption comes as a significant development for the airline and the estimated 1.6 million Pakistanis residing in the UK.

The airline will operate a total of four weekly flights between Pakistan and London, including three from Islamabad and one from Lahore. This move aims to provide direct travel facilities to the Pakistani diaspora, enhancing connectivity between the two nations.

The ceremony marking the resumption was attended by senior aviation officials and included a cake-cutting and raffle draw. Defence Secretary Lt Gen (retd) Muhammad Ali stated, “The resumption of flights will further strengthen ties between the two countries and their people,” emphasizing the importance of this milestone.

PIA’s flight operations to the UK were suspended in June 2020 following a tragic crash in Karachi that resulted in 97 fatalities. The UK Air Safety Committee lifted the ban on Pakistani airlines in July 2025, paving the way for PIA’s return to the London route.

Historically, London has been PIA’s first international destination, with a 71-year association with the route. The first flight safely landed at Heathrow Airport, marking a new chapter for the airline.

Looking ahead, PIA plans to expand its operations further, with intentions to include Birmingham and additional London flights in the future. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott welcomed the restoration of PIA’s London flights, stating, “The resumption reflects the growing relations between Pakistan and the UK.”

PIA is also focused on improving its services and expanding its fleet under new ownership, aiming to enhance the travel experience for its passengers.

This development is seen as a crucial step in revitalizing PIA’s international presence and restoring confidence among travelers. Observers expect that the airline’s renewed operations will contribute positively to the aviation sector in Pakistan.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific timeline for the planned expansion to Birmingham and additional London flights, but the airline’s commitment to improving its services is clear.
