On the evening of October 23, 2023, a fire was reported at The Big Mill on Mill Street in Leek, Staffordshire, at approximately 9:35 PM. The blaze quickly engulfed the entire building, which is a Grade II-listed structure over 165 years old and significant to the local silk industry.

The Big Mill, built in 1860, was one of the earliest large-scale mill buildings in the area. It ceased operations in the 1980s and has remained derelict since 2007. Recently, a planning application was submitted to convert the building into 55 apartments, highlighting its potential for revitalization.

Drone footage captured during the incident revealed the extent of the damage, showing flames consuming the structure and the roof completely collapsed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

An 18-year-old man from Leek has been arrested on suspicion of arson, prompting concerns from local residents about the future of the historic site. One resident lamented, “It’s a shame the councils don’t let them get on and do something with these buildings; they just let them go to rack and ruin. I think there’ll be a lot of sadness because it’s been here so long.”

Dame Karen Bradley, a local MP, expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, “so sad to see the terrible fire at the Big Mill.” Meanwhile, another local, Cawley, criticized the district council, calling the situation an “absolutely disgrace” that reflects poorly on their management of historic sites.

The Big Mill’s historical significance as an example of large-scale silk industry architecture has been recognized by Historic England, emphasizing the loss felt by the community.

As investigations continue, the future of The Big Mill remains uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the damage and the implications for the proposed redevelopment plans.
