By Harry Sutton — 26 June 2026 — 3 min read

The Netherlands established a two-goal advantage over Tunisia in their World Cup 2026 Group F fixture. The match, held in Kansas City, saw an early own goal from Tunisia‘s Ellyes Skhiri, followed by a strike from Brian Brobbey, marking his third goal of the tournament.

The Dutch side, managed by Ronald Koeman, entered the game aiming to secure the top spot in Group F. Their performance in the first half demonstrated a clear dominance, with two goals scored within the initial ten minutes of play. This early lead significantly eased any pressure on the Netherlands.

First Half Dominance

The opening minutes of the match proved challenging for Tunisia. Just moments after a potential scoring opportunity for Tunisia, a dangerous low cross from Denzel Dumfries on the right flank resulted in Skhiri inadvertently deflecting the ball into his own net, giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, in the seventh minute, Brobbey extended the Dutch lead. A free-kick from Reijnders was headed back across goal by Virgil van Dijk, allowing an unmarked Brobbey to volley the ball home from the back post. This made the score 2-0 early in the game.

Throughout the first half, the Netherlands maintained control, exhibiting patient attacking play and prolonged periods of possession. They registered 12 shots compared to Tunisia‘s 4, and completed 302 passes against their opponent’s 126. This statistical advantage highlighted the Dutch dominance.

Despite the comfortable lead, the Netherlands continued to press for a third goal as half-time approached. Dumfries had an attempt on target after cutting inside, but his left-footed shot was saved by Dahmen. Cody Gakpo also had a chance, but a pass from Reijnders did not allow him to connect effectively.

Ryan Gravenberch also had opportunities, with one shot being deflected for a corner and another going over the crossbar. The Dutch defence, however, allowed a few half-chances for Tunisia, though neither side came close to scoring in the minutes leading up to the hydration break.

The match experienced a hydration break, which was met with boos from the crowd. The weather in Kansas City included moderate rain during the second half, with temperatures holding steady in the low 70s.

Group F Implications and Historical Context

The Netherlands‘ strong performance positions them favourably to win Group F. Their victory, coupled with a draw or defeat for Japan in their concurrent match against Sweden, would secure the top spot. The Dutch will automatically advance with either a win or a draw in this fixture, while Tunisia has been eliminated from the tournament.

Historically, Tunisia had a notable qualifying campaign for this World Cup, becoming the first nation to qualify without conceding a single goal. They won nine and drew one of their qualifying games, scoring 22 goals. However, in the current tournament, they have conceded ten goals and are yet to score.

The Netherlands and Tunisia had previously met three times, all in friendly matches. The Dutch won their first encounter in 1978, with the subsequent two games in 1994 and 2009 ending in draws. This match marks their first competitive fixture.

The current standings in Group F show the Netherlands ahead of Japan on goal difference, with both teams having four points. Sweden is in third place with three points, while Tunisia is at the bottom with zero points and one goal scored.

An almost certain victory for the Netherlands in this match suggests they will likely face Morocco in the round of 32. This potential match-up is expected to generate significant interest, particularly in Dutch-Moroccan communities in cities like Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, given the estimated 430,000 Moroccans residing in the Netherlands, including several members of the Moroccan national squad born in the country.

At half-time, the score remained Tunisia 0-2 Netherlands.
