She answered it by emphasizing the importance of events like parkrun, which fosters a sense of belonging among participants.

The parkrun event was part of the National Lottery Open Week, which took place from March 7 to 15. More than 1,300 parkruns and junior parkruns across the UK are supported by National Lottery funding, which raises approximately £32 million each week through player contributions.

During her visit, Dame Laura Kenny expressed her love for living in the area, stating, “I love living in the area and was delighted to come to parkrun today to celebrate National Lottery Open Week.” Her presence at the event highlighted the role of sports in bringing communities together.

“Parkrun brings everyone together. It doesn’t matter how fast you are or how fit you are, anyone can attend,” she added, reinforcing the inclusive nature of the event. The atmosphere was described as infectious, with Tamara Morewood noting, “Her passion for getting people active and enjoying the outdoors was incredibly infectious and it made today’s event feel really special.”

Jane Morewood also remarked on the positive reactions from participants, saying, “The reaction from everyone was just wonderful. You could see their smiles from a mile off.” Such sentiments reflect the community spirit that events like parkrun aim to cultivate.

Dame Laura Kenny, who is also the president of Team England, is currently training for the London Marathon, further showcasing her commitment to fitness and community involvement. Her participation in the parkrun serves as an inspiration for many to engage in physical activities.

As the National Lottery Open Week continues to promote sports and community events, the impact of figures like Dame Laura Kenny remains significant in encouraging public participation. The future of such initiatives looks promising, but details remain unconfirmed regarding further events or expansions in the program.

Sophie Raworth Completes 55km Mountain Race

Sophie Raworth has showcased her impressive endurance by completing a challenging 55km mountain race in a time of 10 hours and 41 minutes. This achievement comes after her recovery from a broken ankle, which she sustained in 2024. The race featured a significant elevation gain of 2,450 metres, testing the limits of her physical and mental strength.

On the day of the race, temperatures reached 23 degrees Celsius, adding another layer of difficulty to the already strenuous course. Raworth’s determination was evident as she pushed through the demanding terrain, reflecting on her journey and the lessons learned along the way. “It turned out that I wasn’t too old,” she remarked, emphasizing her belief in the power of resilience.

In addition to her recent mountain race, Raworth has a history of impressive running accomplishments. She has completed all seven World Marathon Majors and participated in the grueling 150-mile Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert in 2018. Her commitment to running began in her late 30s, and since then, she has consistently pushed her boundaries.

After recovering from her ankle injury, Raworth returned to competitive running with a 5km Parkrun, finishing in 22:14. This time marks her fastest 5km in two years, showcasing her ability to transition back into shorter, faster races after long-distance events. She expressed, “It’s not just the physical strength I’ve gained, it’s the mental fortitude, too,” highlighting the holistic benefits of her running journey.

In 2025, Raworth logged an impressive 1,311.7 miles, a testament to her dedication and training regimen. Her choice of footwear, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5, is noted for its lightweight design and cushioned sole, which likely contributed to her performance during the mountain race.

Reflecting on her experiences, Raworth stated, “Most of all, running has taught me I’m capable of more than I thought.” At 55, she feels stronger than ever, stating, “At 55, my body is stronger than I ever imagined.” This mindset not only inspires her but also resonates with many who face challenges in their own fitness journeys.

Looking ahead, Sophie Raworth is currently training for the London Marathon scheduled for April 26, 2026. Details remain unconfirmed regarding her preparation and oversight following her ankle injury, as well as the specific training load and pacing strategies she employs to transition between ultra distances and faster 5km efforts. Observers are eager to see how she continues to evolve as an athlete in the coming months.
