Virgin Media O2 has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement for the 49.9MW Grange Solar Farm in Suffolk, which will significantly enhance its renewable energy supply. The solar plant is set to become operational in 2027 and will contribute approximately 5% of the company’s total energy needs.

Key statistics:

The Grange Solar Farm will have a capacity of 49.9 MW.

The solar plant is expected to provide around 5% of Virgin Media O2’s total energy supply.

Annual electricity savings for Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club from their solar panels are estimated at £20,000.

Local solar installations generate about 240,000 kWh each year, equivalent to a cost of £60,000 if purchased from traditional energy companies.

Gavin Sutcliffe, General Manager of Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, stated, “We wanted to get our solar panels in place for two reasons – environmental and economic.” This reflects a growing trend among organizations to adopt clean energy solutions while also achieving financial benefits.

The local installations have avoided emissions equivalent to taking 22 family diesel cars off the road, translating into a reduction of about 42 tonnes of greenhouse gases. The combined efforts in the region highlight the increasing role of solar panels in mitigating carbon footprints.

The transition toward renewable energy is bolstered by innovations in technology. A recent study published in Nature Communications introduced a new form of bismuth vanadate (β-BiVO4), which can efficiently absorb sunlight for hydrogen fuel production—further diversifying clean energy sources.

This commitment by Virgin Media O2 aligns with broader industry goals aimed at sustainability. Ilesh Patel from egg Power remarked, “The agreement is a further endorsement of our mission to become the clean energy supplier of choice for telcos and digital infrastructure providers in the UK.” As more companies pursue similar agreements, the impact on the renewable landscape may be profound.
