Clapham High Street witnessed significant disruption as hundreds of teenagers gathered, leading to police intervention and arrests. On April 1, 2026, reports indicated that around 100 youths congregated near the basketball courts, causing chaos and prompting emergency services to respond.

Two teenage girls were arrested for assaulting an emergency worker during the unrest. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with one bystander, Ryan Love, stating, “There was lots of running and screaming and not much actually happening because the police were blocking them from getting into shops and all the other shops had closed and locked their doors.” Another observer, Nicola James, simply labeled the situation as “Total chaos.”

In response to the disturbances, the Metropolitan Police imposed a Section 35 dispersal order in Clapham, aimed at controlling the large gatherings and ensuring public safety. This order allows officers to disperse groups and prevent further escalation of the situation.

Adding to the challenges in the area, Network Rail announced that track upgrades would take place between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction over the Easter weekend. From April 3 to April 6, train services will be affected as engineers replace switches and crossings at London Waterloo.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel due to these service changes, which coincide with the ongoing disturbances in Clapham. Additionally, Queenstown Road (Battersea) will be closed throughout the Easter weekend, further complicating travel in the area.

Historically, large groups of youths have roamed the streets of Clapham, sometimes causing disruptions. The recent events have raised concerns among local residents and business owners, many of whom were forced to close their shops due to the chaos.

As authorities work to restore order, observers are left wondering how the situation will evolve and whether further measures will be necessary to ensure public safety. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term implications of these disturbances on community safety and local businesses.

South Western Railway (SWR) has announced the retirement of its last two Class 455 trains, which were taken out of service on March 20, 2026. The trains, numbered 5712 and 5732, have been laid up and will soon be sent for scrap, marking the end of an era for this class of rolling stock.

On the same day, significant disruptions were reported across the network due to a fallen tree that blocked railway lines. The incident first came to light at 2:44 PM, causing delays and affecting passenger services. By 8:15 PM, SWR had confirmed the disruption, which continued until the lines were reopened at 11:20 PM.

In total, 60 Class 701/0 trains are now operational with South Western Railway, with the exception of one unit, 701003. The last of the Class 701/0s departed from Long Marston on March 5, 2026, completing the transition to newer rolling stock.

During the disruption, SWR allowed affected passengers to book their own taxis and claim refunds for their journeys. Passengers experiencing delays of over 15 minutes were eligible for compensation, as the hold-ups continued for up to 90 minutes after the lines were reopened.

A spokesperson for SWR expressed regret over the inconvenience caused, stating, “We are very sorry for any disruption to your journey.” They also confirmed that response teams were dispatched to address the fallen tree and restore services promptly.

This incident follows the recent Class 455 Farewell railtours, which attracted notable figures, including Rail Minister Lord Hendy, celebrating the legacy of the retired trains. As South Western Railway moves forward, the focus remains on enhancing service reliability and passenger experience amidst ongoing challenges.
