The recent assault caused a ‘massive fire’ at the refinery, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents. This facility has an annual production capacity of about 12 million tonnes, producing approximately 240,000 barrels of oil products each day.

Production at the refinery had already halted on April 16 due to damage from earlier strikes. At least three people have been reported killed as a result of these multiple attacks on the facility.

Dense black smoke was observed rising from the site following the latest drone strike, further complicating firefighting efforts. An oil spill also occurred at sea due to one of the previous drone strikes, raising concerns about environmental consequences.

The Ukrainian military is intensifying its campaign against Russian energy infrastructure to disrupt funding for the ongoing conflict. President Vladimir Putin condemned these actions, stating that ‘drone attacks against civilian infrastructure are becoming more frequent.’

A Russian official, Aleksandr Kurenkov, described the situation as complicated but controllable. However, uncertainties remain regarding how many more strikes may occur and what further impacts they could have on both local communities and the broader Russian oil industry.
