Victor Wanyama has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34. This marks the end of a notable career that included stints at six different clubs across four countries, including Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Wanyama made a significant impact during his time in the Premier League, making 97 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and scoring 7 goals. His partnership with Mousa Dembele was instrumental in helping Tottenham achieve their best-ever finish of second in the Premier League during the 2016/17 season.

His last professional game was for Dunfermline Athletic against Greenock Morton, concluding a journey that began in Kenya. Wanyama was the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League, a milestone that has inspired many young athletes in his home country.

During his time at Celtic, Wanyama won two Premiership titles and the Scottish Cup, solidifying his reputation as a top midfielder. He also made 140 appearances for CF Montreal before becoming a free agent.

In his retirement announcement, Wanyama stated, “Today, I announce my retirement from football.” He reflected on his journey, saying, “A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.” He expressed gratitude to his supporters, adding, “Thank you for walking this journey with me.”

Southampton, one of his former clubs, responded with a message of support, wishing him well in retirement.

Looking ahead, Wanyama plans to transition into coaching and will complete his UEFA A License this year. Observers anticipate that his experience and insights will be invaluable in nurturing the next generation of football talent.

As Wanyama embarks on this new chapter, the football community reflects on his contributions to the sport and the legacy he leaves behind.
