The UK is set to experience a significant shift from warm weather to heavy rain and thunderstorms over the bank holiday weekend. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to reach 25C in eastern England before plummeting below 20C by Monday.

Heavy downpours with thunderstorms are likely across the UK during the bank holiday weekend. Widespread and heavy rain will spread across much of England and Wales on Saturday evening, according to the Met Office.

Key weather forecasts:

Temperatures expected to fall below 20C across the country by Monday.

On Saturday, parts of the East Midlands may see maximum temperatures of 25C.

Average highs in northern England are forecast at around 15C.

The south of England may reach up to 17C.

Greg Dewhurst noted, “Temperatures are starting to come down but in the sunnier moments it is still above average for the time of year.” Meanwhile, Grahame Madge warned about potential heavy, thundery showers moving into southern England on Saturday.

The northern areas might remain largely dry through the weekend, while southern regions brace for showers. On Monday, lingering cloud and scattered showers are expected across southern and central areas.

In some parts of northern Scotland, temperatures could drop to the low teens. Dan Harris explained that rain will reach southern England during the morning and spread north into much of England and Wales later in the day, again heavy at times with a small risk of thunderstorms.

As always, it wouldn’t be a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK without a bit of rain.

The wider picture

Easter weekend usually signifies the start of warmer and sunnier weather. However, this year, the forecast indicates a significant shift as the UK braces for wet and windy conditions over the holiday period.

According to meteorologists, conditions are likely to turn more unsettled starting from Good Friday, April 3, 2026. Heavy bands of rain are expected to move southward from Friday morning and persist throughout the weekend, impacting outdoor plans for many families.

Steven Keates, a meteorologist, noted, “As we head into Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the weather is expected to turn more unsettled, with spells of rain at times, some of which could be heavy.” This forecast aligns with predictions of a 40% chance of rain on Good Friday, suggesting that many may need to reconsider outdoor activities.

Temperatures will also vary significantly across the UK. In Scotland, temperatures are expected to drop to a chilly 1°C on Saturday morning, while parts of the south and southeast of England may see highs of 14°C. This broad temperature range highlights the diverse weather conditions that can occur within the same country.

Easter Sunday is expected to be cloudy with chances of drizzle, maintaining a high of 13°C. Observers note that while the weather may not be ideal for traditional Easter egg hunts, it could still allow for some family gatherings indoors.

Looking ahead to Easter Monday, there is a glimmer of hope as it is predicted to have more breakthroughs of sunshine, with temperatures again reaching highs of 13°C. This could provide a more pleasant end to the long bank holiday weekend.

<p"The northwest is likely to be more unsettled with low pressure systems moving in at times, bringing periods of strong winds and showers or longer spells of rain," said an unnamed meteorologist, emphasizing the variability in conditions across the country. It is also likely to become windy at times across all areas, particularly in exposed northwestern locations, according to Keates.

Details remain unconfirmed, as forecast details may change as the date approaches. However, it is clear that this Easter weekend will not follow the typical trend of warmth and sunshine, prompting many to prepare for a wetter holiday.

As the week progresses, the BBC weather forecast highlights a shift in weather conditions across the UK. Tomorrow, many areas will start bright and dry, but patchy cloud and showers are expected to move in during the afternoon.

These showers may become heavy and thundery at times, with a risk of hail, particularly in the northern regions. The forecast indicates that Friday will bring more cloud cover, with a band of patchy rain moving in from the north-west.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the weather is expected to be breezy with sunny spells and patchy cloud. There may be a few isolated showers in the afternoon, but overall, conditions should improve as the day progresses.

In higher ground areas, tomorrow will also see variable cloud and spells of snow, particularly in the morning. By the afternoon, snow showers will be confined to the highest elevations, while lower areas experience bright spells.

Friday’s forecast suggests that rain will clear, leading to sunny spells and scattered showers throughout the day. This pattern of mixed weather is expected to continue into the weekend.

Tomorrow’s conditions will be particularly windy, with a mix of patchy cloud and locally heavy showers pushing in from the north. The potential for thundery showers remains a concern for many areas.

Thursday is anticipated to start chilly but will transition to a dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine. This brief respite from the rain may provide some relief before the next wave of weather arrives.

Overall, forecasts indicate a mix of weather conditions over the next few days, which could impact outdoor activities and travel plans. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest BBC weather reports to prepare accordingly.

The UK is bracing for snow and gale-force winds as the Met Office predicts a significant drop in temperatures this week. Weather warnings have been issued for several regions.

Snow and Gale-Force Winds Expected

Snow and gale-force winds could return to the UK this week, with the Met Office forecasting a drop in temperatures. Several weather warnings are in place for Wednesday and Thursday, as strong winds of up to 80 mph are possible, particularly in northern and western regions.

Areas at Risk of Snowfall

The Met Office has identified northern and western high ground as the areas most at risk of snowfall during the brief colder snaps expected through the coming weeks. Mountain regions of Scotland, including the Scottish Highlands and the Grampians, are most likely to see wintry showers.

Colder Weather on the Horizon

A notable shift in wind direction to a north-westerly flow will bring a markedly colder day nationwide on Friday, with temperatures expected to struggle to reach double digits. On Friday morning, 9°C is anticipated, contrasting sharply with the recent warmer temperatures.

Weather Warnings in Effect

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for wind on Thursday, indicating that gusts of 70 mph are expected in northern England and Wales, while 60 mph gusts are forecast for Northern Ireland. These conditions may lead to travel disruptions and hazardous conditions.

So far this year, the UK has experienced temperatures as high as 19.2°C, significantly warmer than the expected colder weather. This recent warmth has made the forecast for snow in March particularly notable, as it contrasts with the earlier warmer conditions.

Future Weather Patterns

Observers note that weather patterns may become more blocked later in March, increasing the chance of colder conditions developing for a time. Snow could hit parts of Britain again this month as forecasts warn of plunging temperatures and wintry conditions.

Uncertainties Remain

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timing and extent of snowfall in lower areas, as long-range forecasts are difficult to predict accurately. However, the potential for frost and hill snow remains a concern as temperatures fluctuate.
