Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca addresses player futures and philosophy
Enzo Maresca, the new manager of Manchester City, recently held his first news conference, where he discussed his football philosophy, the club’s pre-season preparations, and the futures of several key players. Maresca was appointed in June, signing a three-year contract to succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca’s return marks his third tenure at Manchester City, having previously coached the Elite Development Squad and served as part of Guardiola’s backroom staff during the 2022/23 season. His appointment follows successful spells at Leicester, where he guided the club to the Championship title in 2023/24, and Chelsea, leading them to the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup between 2024 and 2025.
Maresca’s Football Philosophy and Pre-Season
During his initial media appearance as City boss, Maresca outlined his clear football philosophy, which he stated was evident at his previous clubs. He emphasised that winning matches is the primary objective, a concept he believes aligns with the approach of the previous manager. Maresca stated, “We always try to be aggressive off the ball, control the game and be the ones to impose our ideas and try to do the most important thing, which is win football games in the end.”
Pre-season preparations for Manchester City commenced earlier this week, with staff and players returning to the City Football Academy. However, the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup has meant that Maresca has not yet been working with a full squad, as players involved in the tournament have been granted extended rest periods. Despite this, Maresca expressed satisfaction with the progress observed so far, noting that several Academy players have stepped up to train with the senior team.
Maresca provided an update on when the remaining players are expected to rejoin the squad. He indicated that the final group of players would integrate with the team approximately three or four days before the Community Shield final. Until then, he continues to work with a number of young players, remarking on their energy and quality, and expressing his contentment with their contributions.
Player Futures and Tributes
Maresca addressed the situation surrounding midfielder Rodri, who has been linked with a potential move away from the Etihad Stadium. The manager confirmed that Rodri is scheduled to undergo surgery next week and is expected to return to the squad following his recovery. This update suggests that Rodri remains part of Maresca’s plans for the upcoming season.
When questioned about the futures of Jack Grealish and James Trafford, Maresca offered limited specific details. He did not provide a clear indication regarding their potential movements or roles within the team, leaving their situations somewhat open-ended.
During the news conference, Maresca also paid tribute to former City manager Kevin Keegan, who passed away earlier in the week. He acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Pep Guardiola, describing it as a “privilege.” Maresca also mentioned that he had “nothing to add” regarding his departure from Chelsea, a move that reportedly left the London club feeling “let down.”
