Michael Carrick, the permanent head coach of Manchester United, is reportedly looking to make further adjustments to his squad as the new season approaches. Following a busy start to the transfer window, which saw the arrival of midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for an approximate combined fee of £80m, attention has now shifted to player departures.
Reports indicate that Carrick has informed four players they are no longer part of his plans for the upcoming season. These players include Radek Vítek, Harry Amass, Dan Gore, and Toby Collyer. They have reportedly been advised to seek new clubs.
For Amass, who spent part of last season on loan at Norwich and featured in pre-season matches against Wrexham and Rosenborg, the club is open to either a loan move or a permanent transfer. Gore, a 21-year-old midfielder, made 34 league appearances during a loan spell at Rotherham last season but has been told his first-team opportunities at United will be limited, with the Under-21s being his most likely avenue for playing time. Collyer, aged 22, received similar communication despite having contributed to Hull City‘s promotion last season.
Goalkeeper Vítek had previously expressed a desire to leave the club, indicating his readiness for either a loan or a permanent sale. His prospects for a first-team role this season were further impacted by the signing of Karl Darlow and Tom Heaton‘s decision to extend his contract.
Potential further squad changes and new arrivals
Beyond the four players reportedly deemed surplus to requirements, Manchester United could see additional departures. Manuel Ugarte, who has reportedly fallen out of favour after two seasons at Old Trafford, could be on his way out. This potential exit might influence United’s pursuit of players like Real Madrid‘s Eduardo Camavinga.
On the incoming front, Carrick is expected to bring in at least one more midfielder. The club is also reportedly in need of defensive reinforcements. Despite Harry Maguire‘s recent form, the team is said to be wary of over-relying on him due to past inconsistencies. Concerns also exist regarding Lisandro Martinez‘s persistent injury issues and Matthijs de Ligt‘s lengthy layoff, highlighting the need for a new centre-back.
The situation at right-back is also under review. While Luke Shaw‘s consistent availability last season addressed concerns at left-back, the right flank remains a focus. Noussair Mazraoui could potentially leave, with clubs like AC Milan reportedly interested. Should Mazraoui depart, United would reportedly be short of quality options at right-back, especially with the team returning to the UEFA Champions League.
In terms of attacking options, the club is considering a backup striker. Although Benjamin Sesko is currently the only established out-and-out striker, and Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can play in that role, the demanding schedule of multiple competitions suggests the need for another robust striker. The future of Marcus Rashford at the club is also uncertain, which could further necessitate a new attacking signing.
These potential movements reflect the club’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the squad and build upon their third-place finish in 2025/26, which secured their return to the UEFA Champions League.
