Transfer Market Overview
Transfer Market Overview
With the summer transfer window approaching its final weeks, Premier League clubs are actively engaged in player movements. Gross purchases among the 20 clubs are nearing the £2.2 billion mark. The total net spend, which accounts for fees paid for new players minus sales, is above £850 million. These figures are sourced from Transfermarkt.
Among the highest spenders are recently promoted clubs Ipswich Town and Coventry City, both of which have spent more than £100 million net. Including Hull City, the three promoted teams have collectively spent on new players. This level of spending by promoted clubs has been observed in previous seasons, with Sunderland, Burnley, and Leeds United spending significantly a year ago.
Chelsea continues to lead in net transfer spend, with figures indicating £207 million. This includes amounts related to players previously announced but who signed this summer. Even without these specific fees, Chelsea would remain among the division’s top spenders. The club is reportedly looking to sell several players, with high asking prices, to help reduce recent losses in line with a settlement agreement with UEFA.
Arsenal, the reigning champions, are also seeing significant activity. After being the division’s biggest net spenders a year ago, their spending has again reached nine figures this summer following the signing of Bruno Guimaraes. Profitable player sales would be welcomed by the club.
Club-Specific Updates
Manchester United is in discussions with Bruno Fernandes regarding a new contract. This follows a lucrative proposal from Galatasaray, which offered the 31-year-old a salary of €20 million per year. Fernandes reportedly wishes to remain at United, where his current contract runs until 2027 with an option for an additional 12 months. United is not open to selling Fernandes, and reports indicate no contact from other clubs regarding the Portugal international. Last year, Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia showed interest in Fernandes.
Liverpool‘s situation with Cody Gakpo remains unchanged. While Tottenham Hotspur has shown interest and communicated with the player’s representatives, there have been no formal negotiations between the clubs. Liverpool maintains that the Dutch attacking midfielder, who has four years remaining on his contract, is not for sale.
Aston Villa has resumed talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. Villa is pursuing a season-long loan deal with an option for the midfielder, despite interest from Newcastle United. Bayern reportedly sought a €30 million fee, either as a permanent transfer or as part of a loan option.
Al Hilal has a long-standing interest in Aston Villa‘s Ollie Watkins. The Saudi club is looking to offload striker Karim Benzema and has identified Watkins as a preferred replacement.
Chelsea‘s sporting directors are reportedly working with agent Jorge Mendes to facilitate an exit for midfielder Enzo Fernández, with Manchester City prepared to pursue a deal. However, Manchester City has ended its pursuit of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto due to the asking price. Al Hilal is also reportedly interested in Neto.
Liverpool has reportedly agreed personal terms with both Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, who are awaiting decisions from Paris Saint-Germain regarding their futures. Barcola was absent from PSG‘s recent match against Lens, fueling speculation about his potential departure. Mbaye was also left out of that match and has been linked with an exit.
Arsenal believes that several Premier League clubs may test their resolve over young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri after he was not included in the squad for the Community Shield victory. Arsenal is reportedly seeking $46 million for winger Gabriel Martinelli, with interest from Roma and Napoli. Martinelli would only be allowed to leave if Arsenal can secure a replacement.
Tottenham Hotspur has accepted an offer from Juventus for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on a loan deal with an option for a permanent transfer. Richarlison is reportedly open to leaving Tottenham for Everton, though an initial offer from Everton was unsuccessful.
Jules Koundé is planning discussions with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick to clarify his role for the upcoming season, with Arsenal reportedly interested in the French player. Barcelona is considering Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres as a potential replacement for Ferran Torres. Barcelona also remains in contact with representatives of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford regarding a potential move.
Rodri reportedly ended negotiations with Real Madrid due to concerns about his playing style fitting into the squad and a lack of contact from manager José Mourinho. Mourinho has not requested a move for Arsenal‘s Martín Zubimendi as an alternative to Rodri. Mourinho also declined the opportunity to bring Jacobo Ramón and Chema Andrés back to Real Madrid this summer, instead asking club officials to monitor the two young players for potential moves in 2027.
Lewis Hall has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, with talks potentially accelerating. However, a previous approach was rejected by Newcastle, who are reportedly determined not to sell, having already seen Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes depart this summer.
United has also shown interest in centre-back Kim Min-jae. However, the South Korean international is reportedly clear that he wishes to remain at Bayern Munich and is content with his current role at the club.
Reports suggest that Jarell Quansah could return to England, with Arsenal reportedly in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen, though the German club is hesitant to sell. It is suggested that a fee considerably higher than the amount Leverkusen paid Liverpool last summer would be required.
Arsenal is also reportedly determined to sign Victor Osimhen, despite a warning from Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek that he would not approve any transaction that would not benefit Galatasaray.
