Verstappen extends Red Bull contract until 2030
Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing him to the team until the end of 2030. This agreement aims to conclude discussions regarding the Dutch driver’s future, as he had been linked with potential moves to teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.
Verstappen’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028. However, it reportedly contained clauses that would have allowed him to depart at the conclusion of the current Formula 1 season. The 28-year-old driver expressed his satisfaction with the team, stating, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.”
He further added, “This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue. I have always said it: the team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home.” Verstappen reflected on his journey with the team, noting, “I came to the team hoping to be able to win races. What we went on to achieve together has been simply lovely and we have shared many incredible moments and won four World Championships.”
Commitment Amidst Challenges
The decision to extend his contract comes despite Red Bull experiencing a challenging start to the current season, which introduced new regulations for cars and engines. Verstappen has voiced frustration on several occasions regarding the team’s performance. His best results this season have been two second-place finishes in the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix.
Last season, Verstappen came within two points of securing the world title, finishing behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. This followed a significant comeback in the latter half of the 2025 season, where he overcame a deficit of more than 100 points to the championship leader. Currently, Verstappen is sixth in the world championship standings, trailing title leader Kimi Antonelli by 110 points.
Despite the team’s struggles with the new regulations, which have seen Mercedes emerge with a dominant car, Verstappen has maintained faith in Red Bull. He has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the new regulations and their emphasis on energy management, a sentiment shared by other drivers.
Verstappen’s renewal statement also included praise for team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role last July. Mekies took over after former boss Christian Horner was dismissed following a turbulent period and a decline in competitiveness. Verstappen commented, “Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team.”
He continued, “Everyone [at Red Bull’s base] in Milton Keynes believes in what we are building and I am looking forward to the next chapter, fighting for more victories and competing for championships as we continue to shape the future of this team.”

Team Principal’s Perspective
Laurent Mekies highlighted the significance of retaining Verstappen, stating, “Having Max continue with us and retaining the best driver on the grid is fantastic news.” He added, “Very few partnerships in sport achieve what Max and this team have. Since the very beginning, Max has embodied everything that makes Red Bull Racing special: uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention.”
Mekies further emphasised Verstappen’s impact, noting, “His impact on our team and Red Bull’s motorsport story has been transformational and he has been fundamental to everything we have achieved together.” He believes the decision to continue their journey is based on the trust built over many years and Verstappen’s confidence in the team’s people, culture, and vision for the future.
Verstappen began his Formula 1 career with Red Bull’s junior team, then known as Toro Rosso, in 2015. He was promoted to the senior team after four races of his second season in 2016, immediately securing his first race victory. He has since accumulated 71 Grand Prix wins and four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 history for race victories, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.
While the new deal extends until 2030, contractual mechanisms could allow Verstappen to depart if performance expectations are not met, a common practice in F1 driver contracts. The announcement coincides with Verstappen’s home race this weekend.

Future Implications
The contract extension confirms Verstappen’s commitment to Formula 1, despite his public questioning of the sport’s direction over the past year. He has openly expressed his dislike for the new engines introduced this season, which require extensive energy management due to insufficient recovery capacity for continuous full power operation.
Formula 1 has acknowledged issues with the new rules and is moving towards a direction that aims to allow drivers more freedom in their racing style, which may have influenced Verstappen’s decision. For Red Bull, the news is a significant boost, especially after Verstappen explored options with other teams.
His renewed commitment demonstrates faith in the team, even amidst a season where he has openly expressed dissatisfaction with his car’s performance. The focus of the driver market may now shift to Fernando Alonso and whether the Aston Martin veteran will extend his career in F1.
