Wales Triumphs Over Barbarians in North’s Farewell Match

Barbarians 31-33 Wales: Steve Tandy's side win as George North finishes career in style

Wales Triumphs Over Barbarians in North’s Farewell Match

Wales secured a victory against the Barbarians in a match that saw George North conclude his rugby career. The game, played in warm conditions at Allianz Stadium, served as a preparatory fixture for Wales ahead of the upcoming Nations Championship.

The Barbarians scored, with tries from Vincent Koch, Alex Nankivell, and Santiago Arata. George North also contributed to the Barbarians‘ scoring with two tries and a conversion. Wales, meanwhile, scored, with tries from Dan Edwards (two), Kieran Hardy, Reuben Morgan-Williams, and Ellis Mee.

The match marked Wales‘ first consecutive wins since the 2023 World Cup, though the team acknowledges areas for improvement before the start of the Nations Championship. The fixture was held outside World Rugby‘s official window, meaning Wales‘ squad was selected exclusively from the four domestic regions, with Steve Tandy‘s side missing English and French-based players.

North’s farewell and team preparations

George North, who earned 121 caps for Wales and scored 47 tries for his country, made his final appearance for the Barbarians. He entered the game as a second-half replacement and scored his first try with his initial touch. His final contribution was a conversion with the last kick of the match.

During his career, North helped Wales secure four Six Nations titles and two Grand Slams. He also toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2013 and 2017, participating in three Tests and scoring two tries in a series victory against Australia.

The game was considered a vital test for Wales, particularly for players who had not competed for over a month. The Barbarians squad, which included internationals from different countries, provided a significant challenge. Faf de Klerk, the South African double World Cup-winning scrum-half, captained the Barbarians and described their forward pack as one of the largest he had encountered.

Looking ahead to the Nations Championship

Wales‘ victory against Italy in the Six Nations in March ended a three-year wait for a win in the competition. Kieran Hardy, who featured in the match against the Barbarians, highlighted the team’s desire to build on their Six Nations performance and continue improving throughout the summer.

The upcoming Nations Championship will see the return of players such as scrum-half Tomos Williams, lock Dafydd Jenkins, props Nicky Smith and Rhys Carre, and Louis Rees-Zammit. Steve Tandy is expected to announce his squad for the tournament early next week.

Wales will begin their Nations Championship campaign against Fiji at Cardiff City Stadium. Following this, they will travel for away matches in Argentina and South Africa. The tournament is scheduled to commence next month and conclude in November.

The match against the Barbarians, despite a sparse crowd at Allianz Stadium, offered valuable game time for the Welsh players. The stadium, with an 82,000-capacity, saw fewer than 20,000 attendees, with the top two tiers closed. The fixture was part of a double-header alongside a women’s match in south-west London, as Principality Stadium in Cardiff was booked for a music event.

The Barbarians‘ lineup included Spring, Kellaway, Ward, Nankivell, Vakatawa, Plummer, de Klerk (captain), Kharaishvili, Dee, Koch, Rodda, Taofifenua, Salakaia-Loto, Boshier, and Hughes. Replacements included Thacker, Iscaro, Alo-Emile, Tanga, Joseph, Arata, North, and McConnell. Wales‘ starting lineup featured Murray, Rogers, James, Hawkins, Mee, Edwards, Hardy, G Thomas, Lake (captain), Lewis, Carter, T Williams, Plumtree, Morgan, and Wainwright. Replacements for Wales were Elias, Barratt, Warren, Woodman, Keddie, Morgan-Williams, Costelow, and Grady. The match was officiated by referee Anthony Woodthorpe from England, with assistant referees Alex Thomas and Jamie Parr, and TMO Stuart Terheege, all also from England.
