York Knights secure third consecutive win
The York Knights achieved their third consecutive Super League victory, marking a historical first for the club. This result further highlighted Hull FC‘s ongoing struggles with away matches. Mark Applegarth‘s team overcame a 16-8 deficit at half-time to secure their sixth win of the current campaign. The win propelled them to ninth place in the table, moving them above Hull FC, who have only managed one away victory this season.
Key contributions for York came from David Nofoaluma, Jon Bennison, Denive Balmforth, and Nikau Williams, who all scored tries. Bennison also added two successful kicks, contributing to York‘s efforts against the Black and Whites. The match saw Hull FC initially take the lead with three tries in a 12-minute period during the first half, but they subsequently delivered an error-prone second-half performance.
Match highlights and turning points
York Knights initiated the scoring with two early tries. Nofoaluma expertly finished in the left corner in the eighth minute, giving York the lead. Shortly after, Bennison collected the ball following two strategic chips from Cody Hunter, extending York‘s advantage to 8-0.
However, Hull FC responded when Aidan Sezer scored a try in the 25th minute, bringing his team back into contention. Tom Briscoe then added another try in the 30th minute, followed by Joe Batchelor scoring from a pass by Hugo Salabio. With two conversions from Zak Hardaker, Hull FC held a strong position at the interval.
York‘s comeback began early in the second half, with Balmforth scoring a try just three minutes after the restart. Bennison added the extras, and his subsequent penalty levelled the score at 16-16. This period was marked by a lack of discipline from Hull FC, who conceded six penalties within the first 20 minutes of the second half. Williams then scored a try, giving York the lead and seemingly diminishing Hull FC‘s belief.
In the closing stages of the match, York had to defend intensely to secure their victory. Veteran hooker Paul McShane made a crucial tackle, dislodging the ball from Herman Ese’ese inches from the try line as the Hull FC forward attempted to level the score. This defensive effort proved pivotal in preventing Hull FC from equalising.
Coaches’ reactions and squad changes
Mark Applegarth, head coach for York Knights, expressed pride in his team’s character, particularly during the second half. He noted his frustration at half-time regarding the team’s initial performance but praised their response after the break. Applegarth highlighted the grit, desire, and character shown by his players, especially during the final 15 minutes of defending in their own half.
Andy Last, interim head coach for Hull FC, conveyed his disappointment with much of his team’s performance, particularly the initial 20 minutes and the subsequent 20 minutes after half-time. He cited ill-discipline as a significant factor, stating that it hindered their ability to build pressure. Last also mentioned the disruption caused by Jed Cartwright‘s departure to St Helens, which necessitated late changes to the team, though he clarified this was not an excuse for the performance.
Ahead of the match, Andy Last had named his 21-man squad for the Betfred Super League Round 18 clash. The squad saw the return of Harvey Barron, Ethan O’Neill, and Yusuf Aydin. These players replaced Davy Litten, Will Hutchinson, and Jeremiah Mata’utia, who returned to Leeds after his loan spell concluded. Several players, including Will Pryce, John Asiata, Sam Lisone, Ligi Sao, Arthur Romano, Connor Bailey, Brad Fash, Will Kirby, and Joe Ward, remained sidelined due to various injuries.
The match was officiated by Tara Jones.
