By Harry Sutton — 3 July 2026 — 4 min read

Police have expressed concerns regarding the timing of the government’s decision to permit pubs to remain open until 05:00 BST on Monday for England‘s World Cup match against Mexico. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) stated that the “late announcement” on Thursday would necessitate reassigning officers from other duties and extending shifts.

The NPCC highlighted that the government’s decision was made public on Thursday, despite the team’s potential progression through the tournament having been known for a considerable period. Police are urging fans to be “considerate” and to “drink within sensible limits” during the match, which is a critical last-16 fixture where the losing team will be eliminated.

A joint statement from the NPCC’s football and alcohol policing leads noted that previous tournaments’ knock-out games have seen an increase in violent incidents, particularly within the night-time economy, and a rise in domestic abuse. They added that this is directly linked to alcohol consumption and affirmed their commitment to working with partners and venues to ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for everyone.

Licensing Changes and Industry Reaction

Licensing hours had already been extended for the tournament, and the government had initially indicated that it would not further relax these laws. However, late on Thursday, Sir Keir Starmer announced that pubs could remain open until the conclusion of the game, which is scheduled to kick off at 01:00 UK time.

The match is not expected to conclude until at least 03:00 and could extend even later if it proceeds to penalties. Pub chains such as Greene King have confirmed that over 600 of their pubs across England will stay open late to broadcast the match, while Marston’s stated that more than 400 of its pubs would also be open.

The decision to allow pubs to stay open until 05:00 for the England v Mexico match followed an intervention by Sir Keir Starmer. The Home Secretary is set to utilise legislative power that permits the extension of alcohol licensing hours for events of “exceptional international, national or local significance.” The Communities Secretary, Steve Reed, is informing council leaders about these changes.

Starmer commented that the decision was positive for both supporters and pubs, stating, “Football might be coming home but we’re making sure fans don’t have to. Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together. The whole country will be backing the team. Come on England!”

Previously, the government had relaxed licensing rules to account for the time difference with the US, Mexico, and Canada. For matches kicking off between 17:00 and 21:00, pubs could stay open until 01:00. For kick-offs after 21:00, they could remain open until 02:00. However, to stay open beyond these times, venues typically needed to apply for a temporary event notice at least five working days in advance.

Earlier on Thursday, Business Minister Kate Dearden had stated that the government would “unfortunately” not relax the rules further to cover Monday morning’s match for pubs that had not applied in time. She noted that while pubs could stay open for an additional two or three hours depending on the match start time, this did not apply to the 01:00 kick-off.

However, following a strong reaction, including from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, Starmer reversed this decision on Thursday afternoon to permit pubs to remain open. This change was welcomed by the hospitality sector. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, expressed delight, stating that pubs and fans would be “over the moon” as the best place to watch the match is at the local pub.

Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), described the news as “fantastic” and something that would be “hugely welcomed by operators.”

Workplace and School Considerations

Unions have urged businesses to accept flexible working requests from employees for Monday. Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the TUC, called on employers to “show some common sense and understanding” by allowing staff to work from home or arrive later if feasible.

The head of the National Education Union (NEU), Daniel Kebede, also indicated a desire for a “flexible start” for schools on Monday morning. However, Education Secretary Bridget Philipson stated that she would not advise parents on bedtime routines but asked them to ensure children attended school on Monday.

The RAC, a motoring organisation, cautioned that those who stay up late should not drive until they are fully rested and hydrated, which might mean not driving until “much later in the day.” They highlighted that tiredness, dehydration, and alcohol can be a dangerous combination when driving.

CIPD, representing HR professionals, advised employers to establish “clear expectations” for Monday’s workday. David D’Souza, the organisation’s director of profession, clarified that employers are not obligated to make special arrangements for World Cup matches, and employees should not assume such arrangements will be automatically available.

The match between England and Mexico is scheduled to kick off at 01:00 UK time.

By Harry Sutton — 3 July 2026 — 4 min read

England are set to face Mexico in the World Cup last 16 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. This match presents a significant challenge, particularly due to the altitude of over 7,000ft (2,200m) above sea level. Head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that this tournament would be defined by suffering, and England‘s preparations have focused on the heat in the US, but the altitude in Mexico City introduces a new factor.

Mexico, having performed strongly in their last-32 tie against Ecuador, are considered formidable opponents at the Azteca, where they have lost only twice in 89 competitive games. They will also benefit from strong home support and a physical advantage due to the high altitude. This environment suggests England will need a strategic approach rather than an exhibition of attacking football.

Tactical considerations for Mexico clash

To navigate the conditions and the strong opposition, England may need to adopt a more conservative tactical approach, potentially employing a low block to stifle Mexico. The worst strategy would be to allow the game to become chaotic, as Mexico possesses pace on the flanks and would likely exploit a high defensive line. England‘s pressing was noted to be disorganised during the early stages of their last-32 match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Historically, Mexican World Cups have been challenging for England. Their defence of the trophy in 1970 ended with a loss to West Germany in the last eight, and Diego Maradona eliminated them at the Azteca in 1986, also in a quarter-final. Lessons from the 1986 tournament suggest that adapting to the conditions is crucial. Glenn Hoddle, part of the 1986 squad, recounted difficulties with the altitude during a 1985 summer tournament in Mexico, where England had to adjust their style to conserve energy.

In the 1986 World Cup, after a poor start in the group stage, England adopted a more conservative approach, which led to a 3-0 win against Poland and another 3-0 victory against Paraguay at the Azteca in the last 16. This historical precedent suggests that a compact and controlled style, focusing on set pieces and counterattacks, could be beneficial. Tuchel might consider removing a winger to use Morgan Rogers as an additional midfielder and potentially move Ezri Konsa to right-back, bringing John Stones into central defence for his experience.

Thomas Tuchel has the option of removing a winger and using Morgan Rogers as an extra block in midfield.Photograph: Eddie Keogh/The FA/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Squad depth and selection dilemmas

England‘s recent World Cup campaign has highlighted some persistent issues, despite their escape against the DR Congo. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have been pivotal, contributing goals and inspiration, particularly in wins against Croatia and Panama, and being key figures against DR Congo. However, there is a concern that England relies too heavily on these two players.

The right-back position has been a recurring problem, with various players filling the role. Declan Rice, typically a central midfielder, ended the match against DR Congo at right-back, a move that has drawn comment. While Alan Shearer noted Rice‘s contribution to the equaliser from that position, Micah Richards argued against it, stating Rice‘s energy is vital in midfield, especially at altitude. Richards suggested Ezri Konsa at right-back with John Stones alongside Marc Guehi in central defence.

Image caption,Declan Rice ended up playing right-back against DR Congo, the latest player to take on England's problem position Credit: bbc.com

Tuchel‘s squad selection has also faced scrutiny, particularly regarding the exclusion of natural creative players like Cole Palmer and Phil Foden. While their club seasons were reportedly poor, England has shown a lack of creative force, notably in the goalless draw against Ghana. The debate continues over whether players like Morgan Gibbs-White or Alex Scott would have offered more creative options.

Concerns also exist regarding the backup strikers. Despite Kane‘s strong form, with goals for club and country this season, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have seen limited action. Toney, a surprise inclusion in the squad, has not played in England‘s four games, and Watkins received only six minutes as a substitute against Panama. This suggests that Tuchel is keeping his fingers crossed for Kane‘s continued fitness.

Image caption,Ivan Toney was once again an unused substitute in England's win against DR Congo and has yet to play in the World Cup Credit: bbc.com

Former England captain Wayne Rooney expressed concerns about England‘s openness in midfield when losing possession, suggesting potential trouble against stronger teams if not addressed. The constant changes on the flanks further indicate that Tuchel may still be searching for his optimal starting eleven. England‘s journey continues to the Azteca Stadium for their last-16 encounter.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is preparing to host a Sprint weekend, featuring competitive action from Friday through Sunday. This marks the first time since 2021 that Silverstone will hold a Sprint weekend, bringing a modified schedule to the iconic circuit.

The event, which is the ninth round of the season, will see Formula 1 drivers compete on the 3.661-mile track, known for its overtaking opportunities. The circuit includes challenging sections such as The Loop at the beginning of the lap and a high-speed middle sector leading to the Hangar Straight, where cars can reach speeds over 200mph as they approach Stowe.

Weekend Schedule and Key Drivers

The British Grand Prix weekend officially begins on Thursday, July 2, 2026, with a traditional build-up show live from the grid. On Friday, July 3, the schedule includes practice sessions for F1 Academy, F3, and F2, followed by F3 Qualifying, F2 Qualifying, and the British GP Sprint Qualifying, which is set to start at 4:30pm.

Saturday, July 4, will feature the F3 Sprint, the British GP Sprint at 12pm, and the F2 Sprint. Later in the afternoon, the British GP Qualifying will take place at 4pm, followed by F1 Academy Race 1. The main event, the British Grand Prix race, is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, at 3pm.

Among the drivers, George Russell, fresh from a win in Austria, will be aiming for his first victory on home soil. Lewis Hamilton, a nine-time winner of the British Grand Prix, will be looking to improve his mid-season title hopes following a disappointing race for Ferrari last Sunday. Lando Norris, who won last year’s race at Silverstone, is expected to face strong competition as he attempts to repeat his triumph. Other British drivers, Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad, will be targeting points-paying positions.

Lando Norris claims his first ever home win at Silverstone, beating McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to first place. Credit: skysports.com

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli enters the event as a favourite due to his recent speed, despite not winning the last two races. Max Verstappen is also anticipated to be a strong contender, potentially challenging the home favourites.

Weather Forecast and Track Conditions

The weather forecast for the British Grand Prix weekend indicates dry conditions throughout the three days of track action. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s from Friday to Sunday. On Friday, July 3, temperatures are predicted to range from 12°C in the morning to a high of 24°C, with moderate winds averaging around 15 km/h and gusts potentially reaching 35 km/h. There is a 0% chance of rain, as a ridge of high pressure is expected to provide dry conditions.

Track temperatures on Friday afternoon could reach the low 40s with ample sunshine, or approximately 39°C if conditions are cloudier. Saturday, July 4, is expected to be warmer and dry, with high temperatures in the mid-20s and no rain. Winds could be breezy in the afternoon, with common gusts between 35-45 km/h and peak gusts possibly approaching 50 km/h. Track temperatures could reach near 40-41°C, potentially trending higher with greater afternoon sunshine.

Sunday, July 5, the day of the main race, is also forecast to have excellent weather for racing. Temperatures are expected to range from 16°C in the early morning to a peak of 24°C, with track temperatures again reaching at least the low 40s amid a potential mix of clouds and sun. Winds are predicted to remain moderate at an average speed of 15 km/h with gusts up to 35-40 km/h, and clear visibility is expected with no precipitation.

Viewing Information

For viewers in the UK and Ireland, the entire Silverstone weekend will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1. Additionally, all F1 on-track action will be available for free on Sky One for those with a Sky box, from the practice sessions on Friday afternoon through to the British Grand Prix itself on Sunday, July 5, at 3pm. Non-Sky customers can stream the action with a NOW Day or Month pass, which offers a contract-free membership option.

Live coverage of the race weekend will also be available through a dedicated F1 blog, and highlights will be accessible shortly after the chequered flag on the Sky Sports app. The Sky Sports app also offers subscribers the option to go onboard with any driver during the race.

First Half Action in Toronto

The World Cup 2026 last 32 fixture between Portugal and Croatia in Toronto saw an active first half, with both teams creating opportunities. Early in the match, Portugal had a significant chance. A long ball was kept in play and recycled, leading to Bruno Fernandes taking a shot from a tight angle. The rebound stayed in play, requiring a timely intervention from Croatia to concede only a corner. Another instance saw João Cancelo cross the ball, which nearly resulted in a redirection towards the net by either Cristiano Ronaldo or Fernandes.

Croatia‘s goalkeeper, Dominik Livaković, was active, collecting a cross and attempting to initiate a break with Luka Modrić. However, Modrić‘s pass lacked precision. Portugal maintained possession for periods, with Croatia often dropping players into their penalty area to defend against the Portuguese attack. Despite the defensive efforts, Portugal continued to work the ball effectively.

There were moments of contention regarding fouls. Kovačić caught Nuno Mendes on the foot after the ball was gone, leading to a legitimate free-kick for Portugal, which Ronaldo prepared to take from a distance. Later, Rúben Dias committed a foul on Ante Budimir just past midfield. Croatia also earned another free-kick when Josip Šutalo was fouled.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić fight for the ball during in an entertaining opening half in Toronto.Photograph: Kamil Krzaczyński/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Croatia faced pressure, with Marin Pongračić forced into a dangerous header towards his own goal, managing to put it wide for a corner rather than risking an own goal. On another occasion, Pongračić headed the ball out for a corner instead of a throw-in. Portugal‘s Vitinha subsequently headed the ball over the bar from the resulting corner.

Veteran Players on Display

The match featured two prominent veteran players, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Luka Modrić of Croatia, both born in 1985. These players are among those with the most World Cup appearances in history and have previously won multiple Champions League titles together. Modrić‘s manager, Zlatko Dalić, indicated that this is Modrić‘s final World Cup appearance.

Ronaldo, known for being the record scorer in international football, has previously scored in six World Cups, including a brace against Uzbekistan. Despite his extensive goal tally, none of his international goals have come in a World Cup knockout match. Portugal‘s journey to this stage saw them as runners-up in their group, leading to their match in Toronto.

Cristiano Ronaldo goes close for the Portuguese.Photograph: Cole Burston/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Modrić‘s tournament began with a penalty concession in a 4-2 defeat to England and an early substitution. However, he showed strong form later in the group stage. Croatia, often slow starters in tournaments, managed to secure second place in their group after being fourth after one game and third after two. The nation, with a population under four million, reached the finals in 2018 and finished third in 2022.

Historical Context and Player Statistics

Both Ronaldo and Modrić have demonstrated remarkable longevity in their careers. Only four players have made 200 appearances in senior international football. Ronaldo and Modrić have played 25 and 22 World Cup games, respectively, but have not faced each other in the competition. They have shared the pitch in 232 matches, with 222 of those for Real Madrid and 10 as opponents.

Modrić was named the best player in the 2018 tournament, winning the Golden Ball, and was the third finest in 2022. In 2018, he also received the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA best player award, succeeding Ronaldo. Ronaldo was the runner-up and among those who voted for Modrić. They were teammates at the Bernabéu for six years, during which Real Madrid won four Champions League titles. Ronaldo scored three goals in those finals and became Real Madrid‘s record scorer with 450 goals. Modrić remained at the Bernabéu for an additional seven years, securing two more Champions League titles before his departure a few months before his 40th birthday.

Historically, Modrić has not been on the winning side against Ronaldo when they have played in opposition. The outcome of this match could determine whether Modrić concludes his World Cup career or if Ronaldo‘s pursuit of the competition’s title, spanning two decades, comes to an end.

Spain secures knockout stage victory

Spain advanced to the World Cup last 16 following a 3-0 victory against Austria. The win marks Spain’s first knockout stage triumph at the World Cup since 2010, the year they last lifted the trophy. The match saw Mikel Oyarzabal score twice, with Pedro Porro adding another goal.

The European champions demonstrated a strong performance, maintaining a clean sheet for their fourth consecutive game in the tournament. This achievement saw goalkeeper Unai Simón surpass Iker Casillas’s record. The defensive pairing of Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte has been noted for their solid play throughout the tournament.

The game, played in Los Angeles, saw Spain exhibit an intense and dominant style of play from the outset. Coach Luis de la Fuente’s side progressed at the expense of Ralf Rangnick’s Austria, setting up a clash against either Portugal or Croatia in the next round.

Dominant performance from the start

The match began with an early statement from Spain, as Lamine Yamal had a shot on goal within the first minute, saved by Alexander Schlager. This early attempt set the tone for Spain’s offensive approach. A notable battle unfolded between Lamine Yamal and Austria’s Konrad Laimer, with both players actively involved in the early exchanges.

Austria also showed ambition, with Marcel Sabitzer and Laimer attempting to create opportunities. However, Spain’s defence, including crucial interventions from Pau Cubarsí, managed to thwart these efforts. Luis de la Fuente had anticipated an aggressive approach from Austria, a style that ultimately suited Spain’s strategy by creating space for their play.

Spain continued to press, generating several chances. An early volley from Dani Olmo was inadvertently blocked by Oyarzabal, and Aymeric Laporte headed over. Despite a disallowed goal for Marc Cucurella due to an alleged foul on Alexander Schlager, Spain’s persistence paid off. Oyarzabal eventually scored the opening goal from a low delivery by Cucurella.

Spain's Mikel Oyarzabal scores their third goal past a despairing Alex Schlager.Photograph: Mark J Terrill Credit: theguardian.com

The second half saw Spain maintain their control. Although Austria’s Sasa Kalajdzic, a recent substitute, had a header go over the bar, Spain’s dominance was clear. They had accumulated 17 attempts by this point in the game. The turning point came when Pedro Porro scored with a header, following a move that originated from a blocked effort by Olmo and a pass from Álex Baena.

Oyarzabal then completed his double, concluding a fluid team move that began with Unai Simón and showcased Spain’s cohesive play. This final goal solidified Spain’s 3-0 lead and their progression in the tournament. The team’s ability to move the ball quickly and stretch the pitch proved effective in controlling the match.

Pedro Porro celebrates after making it 2-0.Photograph: Christopher Torres/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

Looking ahead to the last 16

Spain’s methodical approach has seen them progress through the tournament without conceding a single goal so far. This defensive solidity, combined with their attacking prowess, positions them as a formidable opponent for their next match. The team’s collective strength has been highlighted, with players like Lamine Yamal receiving high ratings for their performances.

The victory against Austria was a comprehensive display, with Spain not allowing a single shot on target, a feat not seen in a knockout match since Germany in the 2014 final. This statistic underscores the defensive discipline and overall control exhibited by Luis de la Fuente’s squad.

As Spain prepares to face either Portugal or Croatia, their consistent form and ability to secure decisive victories will be key. The team’s depth was also evident, with substitutions such as Marc Pubill replacing Laporte and Fabián Ruiz coming in for Pedri in the closing minutes of the match.

By Harry Sutton — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

Tottenham are significantly increasing their expenditure in the current transfer window, with the club set to exceed its previous record for spending in a single window. The club has secured the signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, with further transfer activity anticipated.

The combined fees for Fernandes and Tonali are reported to be £185m. This brings Spurs’ total outlay in this window to £237m, surpassing the £225m spent in the summer of 2023. The club’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has reportedly concluded business in midfield and defence and is now expected to focus on strengthening the attack.

Key Signings and Managerial Influence

Tottenham has agreed to a deal worth up to £100m for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. This follows the confirmation of Mateus Fernandes’ arrival from West Ham for £85m. De Zerbi’s influence is noted as a significant factor in attracting players, with Tonali reportedly acknowledging the manager’s role in his decision to join.

De Zerbi had previously identified Tonali as a target during his tenure at Sassuolo when Tonali was playing in Serie A. The club’s aggressive approach in the transfer market has drawn attention from rival clubs, particularly given Spurs’ 17th-place finish in the league.

Sandro Tonali was spotted at Milan airport ahead of his imminent move from Newcastle United to Tottenham. Credit: skysports.com

The club’s ambition is seen as a reflection of their coach’s vision. Both Tonali and Fernandes were key targets, and agreements were reached by July 1. This marks a shift from previous transfer windows for Spurs, with De Zerbi reportedly taking a more direct role in transfer business.

The acquisition of Mateus Fernandes was particularly important, as Spurs were determined to secure him ahead of Manchester United. This move is seen as a statement of intent, especially after United previously beat Spurs to the signing of Bryan Mbeumo a year ago.

Financial Strategy and Future Plans

A significant change in Spurs’ strategy includes an altered approach to wage budgets, allowing them to offer competitive salaries comparable to top clubs. This change is attributed to new leadership, with Vinai Venkatesham and Peter Charrington now operating under the Lewis family, following Daniel Levy’s departure as chairman at the start of last season.

The club’s strong off-the-field revenues, generated from its stadium through concerts, boxing matches, and NFL UK games, contribute to its financial capacity. Spurs were ranked as the ninth-biggest generator of revenue among global football clubs in the latest Deloitte Football Money League table, positioned just behind Manchester United and ahead of Chelsea.

Close up of Mateus Fernandes Credit: bbc.com

Financially, there are reportedly no concerns regarding the new Squad Cost Ratio rules, which replaced PSR as of July 1. Spurs are among the clubs expected to benefit from these rule changes. The club has also consistently participated in European competitions, featuring in 18 of the last 20 seasons.

Despite the new arrivals, player sales are also anticipated to create space in the squad, especially without European football commitments. Luka Vuskovic is set to join Brighton for £50m, marking the club’s fourth-biggest sale. Vuskovic, who is 19, never played a competitive match for Spurs after being acquired for approximately £9m.

Other potential departures include Lucas Bergvall, who has interest from Nottingham Forest but is reportedly not expected to leave, and Pape Matar Sarr, who has attracted interest from Brentford. With six central defenders currently in the squad, Cristian Romero could also be a candidate for sale if a suitable offer is received. Richarlison is in the final year of his contract, and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also likely to depart, with interest from Italy.

Antonin Kinsky is expected to become the primary goalkeeper after his performances at the end of last season, with Martin Dubravka joining as an understudy. Reports of interest in Manchester City’s and England’s James Trafford are understood to be inaccurate. The early transfer activity is seen as transformative, bringing in players ready to make an immediate impact, aligning with De Zerbi’s goal of pushing for Europe.

Everton have announced the signing of midfielder Hayden Hackney from Championship side Middlesbrough. The Premier League club confirmed the deal on Thursday. Hackney, who is 24, has signed a five-year contract with the Merseyside club.

While the initial transfer fee was not officially disclosed, British media reports indicate an agreement worth approximately £16.5 million. This figure could potentially increase with additional add-ons. Hackney’s move represents manager David Moyes’ first acquisition of the summer transfer window.

Hackney’s transfer follows an impressive 2025-26 campaign for Middlesbrough, where he was recognised for his performances by being named the Championship Player of the Season. He captained Middlesbrough throughout the season, making 41 appearances across all competitions.

Speaking about his decision to join Everton, Hackney highlighted the influence of his new manager. He stated that Moyes’ track record of bringing players from the Championship to the Premier League was a significant factor in his choice. Hackney expressed his hope to be the next player to successfully make this transition with Everton.

Hackney also shared his expectations for his role at the club, telling fans to anticipate a blend of attacking and defensive contributions. He mentioned his ability to carry the ball well, make late runs into the box, and potentially score goals. He believes there is more to come from his game once he adapts to the Premier League.

Moyes’ Perspective and Club Ambitions

David Moyes commented on the signing, describing Hackney as a promising young player who the club has been monitoring for some time. Moyes expressed his anticipation of working with the midfielder. He noted Everton’s history of identifying successful players from the Championship who have proven to be good investments for the club, hoping Hackney will follow this trend.

Moyes also highlighted Hackney’s status as an England Under-21 international, indicating that his arrival will enhance competition in midfield, a key objective for the upcoming season. Hackney was part of the England team that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2025.

Middlesbrough had previously rejected multiple bids from Everton for Hackney, holding out for a higher valuation for a player with 12 months remaining on his contract. Interest from Crystal Palace reportedly strengthened Middlesbrough’s negotiating position, but Hackney was reportedly keen on joining Everton.

Everton will be looking for Hackney to help the club progress after a challenging end to the 2025-26 season. The Toffees were in contention for a European spot for much of the campaign but concluded in 13th place following a poor run of results. The club also exited both domestic cup competitions early and has not secured silverware since the 1995 FA Cup.

Upcoming Fixtures and Preparations

Everton are set to commence their pre-season preparations, with their first match scheduled against Dundee on 18 July. Other friendly fixtures include matches against Bolton, Stoke City, and Newcastle.

The Premier League season for Everton will begin with a home fixture against Crystal Palace. The club is also scheduled to face Manchester United and Tottenham within their opening four league matches.

In other transfer news, Tottenham have confirmed the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. The 21-year-old Portugal international began his career at Sporting and spent a season at Southampton in 2024-25 before joining the Hammers in August of last year.

Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised Fernandes’ qualities, noting his ability to combine ball control with intensity and intelligence, which aligns with the team’s playing style. De Zerbi highlighted Fernandes’ existing experience in the Premier League, despite his age, and his consistent performance at that level.

Fernandes expressed his excitement for this new chapter, citing Tottenham as a significant club and crediting the head coach as a key factor in his decision. He mentioned a shared football philosophy with De Zerbi, focusing on a strong, combative, and energetic approach to winning games. De Zerbi believes Tottenham provides an ideal environment for Fernandes’ continued development.

By Harry Sutton — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

Team Selection and Player Movements

Wales head coach Steve Tandy has announced his team to face Fiji on Saturday, making six changes to the side that played against the Barbarians. A notable change sees Louis Rees-Zammit return to his preferred position on the wing for the upcoming Nations Championship fixture. This move follows a period where Rees-Zammit had been utilised at full-back for both club and country.

Rees-Zammit’s return to the wing comes after a season that saw him transition back to rugby from the NFL. He had previously started on the wing for Wales in the autumn, scoring against Japan and New Zealand. However, both his club, Bristol Bears, and the national team moved him to full-back midway through the campaign. While he scored three tries in his first two starts at full-back for the Bears, he then went through 10 matches in that position for both Bristol and Wales without scoring. It was only after Bears director of rugby Pat Lam moved him back to the wing that Rees-Zammit scored again late in the season.

The upcoming match against Fiji presents an opportunity for Rees-Zammit, who has a history of scoring against them. Of the 13 international teams he has faced, Fiji is the only one against whom he has scored on every occasion, touching down in their last two meetings in 2021 and 2023. Both of these scores occurred while he was playing on the wing. Despite a minor issue that kept him out of training on Tuesday, Rees-Zammit is fit to play this weekend, bringing his tally of 16 tries from 40 caps to the fixture.

In other backline changes, Blair Murray retains his spot at full-back from the Barbarians match. Cardiff’s Josh Adams is brought back into the side, having been on waterboy duties last Saturday. The only other alteration in the backline involves Saracens-bound Tomos Williams, who comes in at scrum-half.

The forward pack sees three changes. Rhys Carre replaces Gareth Thomas at loosehead. Adam Beard will start alongside Ben Carter, having recently been involved in the Top 14 final with Montpellier. Alex Mann continues in the back-row, making him, alongside captain Dewi Lake, the only players to start every Test match under Coach Tandy. Saturday’s game will mark Mann’s 10th cap under the new Wales coach.

On the bench, Taine Plumtree will provide second-row cover, while Ospreys tighthead Ben Warren is set to potentially make his Test debut. The full Wales squad for the match includes: Blair Murray; Louis Rees-Zammit, Eddie James, Joe Hawkins, Josh Adams; Dan Edwards, Tomos Williams; Rhys Carre, Dewi Lake (c), Dillon Lewis, Ben Carter, Adam Beard, Alex Mann, Jac Morgan, Aaron Wainwright. Replacements are: Ryan Elias, Nicky Smith, Ben Warren, Taine Plumtree, James Botham, Kieran Hardy, Sam Costelow, Ellis Mee.

Squad Challenges and Injury Updates

The team selection follows a week of uncertainty for Wales, marked by a dispute between players and the WRU over match fees. This issue was resolved late on Wednesday afternoon, allowing Steve Tandy to focus on the opening fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium. This match is considered a significant opportunity for Wales to secure a win this summer, especially with subsequent trips to Argentina and South Africa scheduled for later in the month.

However, Wales will be without captain Dafydd Jenkins for the entire Nations Championship campaign due to a shoulder injury. Exeter Chiefs boss Rob Baxter confirmed that Jenkins sustained the injury during the Gallagher PREM Final against Northampton Saints and will undergo surgery. Jenkins, who was a constant presence for Steve Tandy during the Six Nations campaign, is expected to be fit for the start of the new Gallagher PREM season. This is not Jenkins’ first experience with shoulder issues, as he also missed the start of the 2024-2025 campaign after undergoing double surgery for a knee and a shoulder rotator cuff injury sustained on international duty.

The 33-man squad for the Nations Championship includes two uncapped players: Exeter Chiefs back rower Kane James and Ospreys tight-head prop Ben Warren. Coach Tandy commented on the squad, stating that it was selected to mirror what will be required for the World Cup in 2027, aiming to build competition among the players. He acknowledged that some tough decisions were made during the selection process.

The Wales Nations Championship fixtures include the match against Fiji on Saturday, 4 July, 2026, at the Cardiff City Stadium. This will be followed by an away fixture against Argentina on Saturday, 11 July, 2026, at the Estadio San Juan de Bicentenario. The final match of the campaign will see Wales travel to face South Africa on Saturday, 18 July, 2026, at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban.

By Harry Sutton — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) is set to play its first knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara. This match marks a significant moment for the co-hosts as they aim to advance further in the tournament.

Christian Pulisic is expected to start for the USMNT after recovering from an injury that saw him miss the match against Australia and come off the bench against Turkey. His return is anticipated to boost the team’s offensive capabilities, as he previously played a key role in creating goals during the team’s opening match against Paraguay.

The USMNT manager, Mauricio Pochettino, made several changes to the squad for the group finale against Turkey, following the team’s confirmation as group winners. The team will be playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Pochettino at the helm. Bosnia-Herzegovina, managed by Sergej Barbarez, is expected to adopt a defensive 3-4-1-2 formation, similar to strategies employed by Paraguay and Australia in earlier group-stage encounters.

Key Players and Tactical Approaches

The ability of the USMNT to break down a defensive setup, often referred to as a low block, will be crucial. Folarin Balogun has been instrumental in overcoming such defenses in previous matches. Against Paraguay, Balogun’s run led to an own goal and he later scored from a chance created by Pulisic, adding another goal before half-time. In the second group-stage game, with Pulisic sidelined, Balogun played on the wing, contributing to another own goal for the U.S. If the U.S. can penetrate the Bosnian defense, Balogun is expected to be a central figure.

The match officials for this encounter include Raphael Claus as the referee, with Juan Ernesto Soto Arévalo as the Video Assistant Referee. Assistant referees are Danilo Ricardo Simon Manis and Rodrigo Figuereido Henrique Correa, while Darío Herrera serves as the Fourth Official and Nicolás Gallo Barragán as the Assistant VAR Official.

For Bosnia-Herzegovina, Wisconsin-born winger Esmir Bajraktarevic, who began his international career with the U.S., is not in the starting lineup but could feature from the bench. The USMNT will be without Mark McKenzie due to a foot injury and Cristian Roldan due to a muscle strain, as confirmed by U.S. Soccer.

Historical Context and Tournament Dynamics

The USMNT has a limited history of knockout round victories against European opposition, with only two such wins: a 1-0 victory over Estonia in the 1924 Olympics and a 2-0 win against Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup semi-final. This match presents an opportunity to add to that record.

The World Cup knockout stage has been characterized by tight matches, with many games decided in the final minutes. Seven of the nine knockout games played so far have seen decisive moments from the 86th minute onwards. Examples include South Africa’s 0-1 loss to Canada with a stoppage-time goal, and Belgium’s 3-2 win over Senegal with a winning goal in extra time.

The United States is the third co-host to play in the knockout stage, following Canada and Mexico, both of whom secured victories in their respective matches. Canada defeated South Africa 1-0, marking their first-ever knockout stage win in a World Cup. Mexico advanced after a 2-0 lead against Ecuador. If the USMNT wins, it would mean three co-hosts have progressed to the round of 16.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, as a third-place finisher in their group, faces a challenging opponent in the U.S. However, the recent upset by Paraguay, another third-place finisher, against Germany on penalties, offers a glimmer of hope. Other third-place teams like Sweden, Ecuador, and DR Congo have exited the tournament.

The winner of this match will proceed to face Belgium in Seattle on July 6. Belgium secured their spot after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal in extra time. A previous encounter in March saw the USMNT lose 5-2 to Belgium, highlighting the challenge that lies ahead should they advance.

Altitude challenge for England

England are set to face Mexico in a World Cup 2026 last-16 fixture, with head coach Thomas Tuchel highlighting the significant challenge posed by playing at high altitude. The match is scheduled for Monday, 6 July, at 01:00 BST, at Mexico City‘s Azteca Stadium, which is approximately 7,200ft above sea level.

Tuchel stated that the team will not have sufficient time to physically adapt to the thinner air before the game. He explained that adaptation to such altitudes typically requires a week or two for athletes to acclimatise and increase red blood cell production. However, England is expected to arrive in Mexico City only two days prior to the match.

Mexico, in contrast, has played all four of their World Cup games at high altitude, including three matches at the Azteca Stadium and one in Guadalajara, which is around 5,000ft above sea level. This experience means their players are already accustomed to the conditions, providing them with a considerable advantage, according to Tuchel.

The lower barometric pressure at high altitude results in less oxygen being taken into the bloodstream with each breath, which can create difficulties for athletes. Tuchel acknowledged this as a major obstacle but expressed confidence in his team’s readiness to deal with the situation.

England secured their spot in the last-16 after Harry Kane scored a brace against DR Congo, leading to their trip to Mexico City.

Match details and ticket information

The highly anticipated knockout match between Mexico and England will take place at the Estadio Azteca. This fixture marks a significant encounter in the tournament’s Round of 16.

For fans looking to attend, the major official World Cup ticket lotteries, including the Visa Presale, Early Ticket Draw, and the post-draw Random Selection Draw, have concluded. Over 500 million requests were processed during these phases, leading to very low primary ticket availability.

The Last-Minute Sales Phase commenced on April 1, offering tickets on a first-come, first-served basis with immediate confirmation. This phase represents the final opportunity to purchase official tickets directly from FIFA. Additionally, the Official FIFA Resale Marketplace is operational, serving as an authorised platform for fans to buy and sell verified tickets at regulated prices.

Alternatively, fans might explore secondary marketplaces for last-minute tickets, though it is advised to review the terms and conditions of such sites.

FIFA has implemented variable pricing for the 2026 tournament. Tickets for the Group Stage were available for specific Supporter Tiers, while prices for the Final have been noted to reach higher figures, with secondary marketplaces potentially exceeding these amounts.

Tuchel’s message and team outlook

Tuchel addressed the pressure associated with England’s long wait for another World Cup victory, stating that he did not perceive it as a factor in his side’s recent performance. He indicated that the team displayed a strong attitude and readiness to face challenges.

The match against Mexico is scheduled to kick off at 01:00 BST. When asked about children watching the late-night game, Tuchel humorously suggested that parents should write an excuse for school, emphasising the rarity of the World Cup, which occurs every four years, and the importance of fan support.

The England versus Mexico match is set to be broadcast live across various platforms.
