For the first time, all Royal Navy recruits will complete a 10-week Initial Naval Training course at HMS Raleigh starting June 1, 2026. This significant shift reflects modern operational practices in military training.

The new system creates a shared starting point for Officers and Ratings, aligning their paths for the first time. Previously, the Royal Navy maintained separate training pathways for these two groups. The redesign aims to remove duplication across the training pipeline.

Following the initial training at HMS Raleigh, officers will progress to a 14-week commissioning course at Britannia Royal Naval College. This college has served as the leadership training center for officers since its opening in 1905.

The changes are part of the Royal Navy’s broader strategy to modernize its training and support the First Sea Lord’s Warfighting Ready plan by 2029. This initiative strives to strengthen operational effectiveness and ensure that new Officers are well-prepared for leadership roles in increasingly complex environments.

The first officer cadet cohort will commence this new initial training phase on June 1, 2026. Additionally, Royal Naval Reservists will follow a similar pathway with an accelerated eight-week officer program.

No redundancies will result from this training realignment. Rear Admiral Andrew Rose emphasized that the Royal Navy has always adapted to maintain its advantage over emerging threats. He stated, “This modernised system strengthens our ability to generate capable, confident and mission-ready leaders.” Captain Andrew Bray added that everyone must meet the high standards demanded by the Royal Navy.
