Morgan Rogers joins Chelsea from Aston Villa in significant transfer

Morgan Rogers has completed his transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee of £117m, signing a seven-year deal. This move makes him the Blues’ record signing. A deal was reportedly agreed upon on Saturday for the 23-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea securing his signature ahead of Arsenal, who had also been in discussions to sign the England international.

Rogers expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea, stating his admiration for the club since childhood and viewing them as the biggest club in London. He is particularly enthusiastic about the project under new manager Xabi Alonso, noting that Alonso’s approach aligns with his own footballing philosophy. The opportunity to play alongside his friend Cole Palmer, with whom he has known for a decade, is also a thrilling prospect for Rogers.

A new chapter at Chelsea

The chance to work with Xabi Alonso was a key factor in Rogers’ decision to choose west London. Alonso, a former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder, was hired partly to attract high-calibre players to Chelsea. Rogers recently returned from helping England secure a third-place finish at the World Cup, where he started in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and the bronze medal match against France.

Rogers is described as a versatile forward, capable of playing multiple attacking roles, which addresses a need for Chelsea. His career has seen a rapid ascent since his move to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Aston Villa, he scored 31 times in 125 appearances under Unai Emery and contributed to the team’s top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season.

This transfer represents one of the most significant acquisitions during Chelsea owners BlueCo’s four-year reign. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously indicated the club’s intention to target players who could help them contend for the title, following an underwhelming campaign where the team finished 10th and exited the Champions League in the last 16.

Personal journey and influences

Rogers’ footballing philosophy is rooted in maintaining joy and spirit in his play, an attitude he cultivated from childhood. He aims to prevent the pressures of top-level football from overshadowing his love for the game. This mindset has been crucial throughout his career, including during loan spells from Manchester City to Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool, which he credits with teaching him how to handle adversity and setbacks positively.

His family has played a significant role in his journey, providing support and a platform for him to pursue football. Rogers, who turns 24 on Sunday, emphasised their belief in him to remain free and happy in his decisions. His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea, has also been a major influence, offering guidance and challenging his perspectives, particularly as scrutiny intensified following his move to Aston Villa and representation of England at the World Cup.

Rogers is the fourth signing for Chelsea this summer, joining defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda as the club overhauls its squad. This deal is considered by some to be the biggest for the club since Cole Palmer’s move from Manchester City in 2023.
