Senegal secure third-place finish in Group I, await World Cup knockout fate
Senegal’s Group Stage Performance
Senegal have concluded their World Cup 2026 group stage campaign, securing a third-place finish in Group I. Their progression to the knockout rounds is now dependent on results from other groups, as they vie for one of the eight best third-placed team spots.
The African side faced a challenging start to the tournament. They were defeated 3-1 by France in their opening match, with Kylian Mbappe scoring two goals. Following this, Senegal suffered another loss, falling 3-2 to Norway, where Erling Haaland also contributed two goals.
Despite these initial setbacks, Senegal delivered a strong performance in their final group match against Iraq, securing a dominant 5-0 victory. This win was crucial for their goal difference, which could be a deciding factor in their qualification hopes.
Decisive Victory Against Iraq
The match against Iraq saw Senegal capitalise on their opportunities, especially in the second half. Habib Diarra opened the scoring early in the fourth minute while both teams still had eleven players on the pitch. The game’s dynamic shifted significantly when Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka was sent off in the 13th minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity involving Sadio Mané. Initially, a yellow card was shown, but after a video monitor review by referee Anthony Taylor, the decision was upgraded to a red card.

Despite playing against ten men for much of the first half, Senegal found it challenging to convert their advantage into goals immediately. However, the second half saw a surge in their attacking play. Ismaïla Sarr scored in the 56th minute, initiating a period of sustained pressure. His goal came after Lamine Camara forced a turnover in Iraq’s box, dribbled to the byline, and delivered a low cross for the Crystal Palace forward to tap in.
Substitute Pape Gueye made a significant impact after entering the game. He scored his first goal just before the hour mark, receiving a pass from Sarr, dribbling to his left, and unleashing a left-footed strike that curled past Jalal Hassan into the top corner. Gueye then added his second goal in the 71st minute, connecting with Iliman Ndiaye’s bouncing pass to strike a powerful half-volley that left the goalkeeper with little chance.

Iliman Ndiaye sealed the victory with another long-range effort in the 82nd minute, bringing Senegal’s goal tally to five. This comprehensive win concluded a difficult tournament for Iraq, who had also suffered heavy defeats against France and Norway, and were eliminated from their second World Cup.
Qualification Scenarios
With three points and a goal difference of +2, Senegal currently holds the fifth-best record among third-placed teams. However, their qualification is not yet guaranteed, as four teams positioned below them in the third-place rankings still have their final group matches to play. The top eight third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stage, with points being the primary determinant, followed by goal difference if points are equal.
Senegal is now dependent on the outcomes of matches in Group H, Group G, Group L, Group K, and Group J, all of which are scheduled to conclude over the next few days. They are already confirmed to finish ahead of Scotland from Group C and South Korea from Group A in the third-place standings.
Specific results could secure their spot. A victory for Spain against Uruguay in Group H would bring them closer to qualification. Furthermore, a win for Egypt against Iran, combined with anything less than a win for New Zealand against Belgium, would guarantee Senegal’s progression to the next round.
The team’s fate remains uncertain as they await the final results from the remaining group stage fixtures.
