At the time of its shutdown, Spirit Airlines had 4,119 domestic flights scheduled between May 1 and May 15, offering 809,638 seats. This accounted for 5 percent of all US flights at one point. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned passengers not to go to the airport as there would be no assistance available.
The Trump administration proposed a $500 million bailout to save Spirit Airlines, but this effort ultimately failed. A creditor close to the deal remarked, “The Trump administration made an extraordinary effort to try and save Spirit, but you can’t breathe life into a corpse.” This statement underscores the severity of the airline’s financial woes.
Founded in 1983 in Detroit as Charter One Airlines, Spirit had operated for 34 years before its sudden shutdown. The airline’s last flight landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport from Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
In a statement, Spirit Airlines acknowledged the challenges it faced: “Unfortunately, despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook.” This reflects broader trends affecting the airline industry as rising costs continue to squeeze profitability.
The situation raises questions about passenger refunds and how those affected will be compensated. Dave Davis, a representative from Spirit, stated, “We didn’t intentionally sell any tickets thinking we weren’t going to be here,” indicating that the airline did not foresee its imminent closure.
