Following Spain’s victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, President Donald Trump’s presence during the trophy presentation and subsequent celebrations at the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, sparked commentary. Trump, alongside Fifa president Gianni Infantino, presented medals and the trophy to the Spanish team, but his lingering on stage during the team’s celebration became a point of discussion.
Seth Meyers, on his show Late Night with Seth Meyers, highlighted the perceived hypocrisy of Trump celebrating with Spain just days after reports indicated he had ordered officials to prepare a potential trade embargo against the nation. Meyers noted that Trump’s continued presence on stage, even as Infantino and Spain’s captain, Rodri, appeared to encourage him to leave, was unexpected.
Post-match presence and reactions
After Spain secured a 1-0 victory against Argentina, Trump and Infantino were met with boos from the crowd as they stepped onto the pitch to present the medals. Trump reportedly seemed reluctant to depart the stage as the Spanish team began their celebrations, eventually being ushered off by Infantino.
This incident was not the first time Trump had been observed remaining on stage during a team’s celebration. He had a similar presence when Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup, where defender Marc Cucurella was also present. Chelsea’s captain, Reece James, reportedly stated that he was informed Trump would present the trophy and then exit the stage, while player Cole Palmer expressed confusion over the situation.
Meyers humorously suggested that Trump’s actions were consistent with a pattern, stating that “everything goes out the window if gold is around.” He also joked about Infantino’s attempts to guide Trump off the stage, implying that even the head of Fifa found the situation to be a “bad look.”
Trump’s appearance at the final followed a period of controversy during the World Cup, including a widespread backlash after USMNT star Folarin Balogun’s red card was controversially overturned after an intervention by Trump. Infantino’s presidency has also faced scrutiny, with some accusing him of being too close to Trump, particularly in the context of the United States hosting the tournament.

The celebration occurred shortly after Trump had reportedly instructed U.S. trade secretary Scott Bessent to cut trade with Spain during a Nato summit in Turkey. Trump’s remarks were reportedly driven by his dissatisfaction with Pedro Sánchez’s government and its refusal to increase defense spending to the US target of 5 per cent of GDP for European allies.
The office of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded to these comments by stating they would be treated as “business as usual.” The statement also affirmed Spain’s strong social, cultural, and economic ties with the U.S., indicating no plans to alter this relationship.
During the World Cup final itself, Trump watched the match from a glassed-in suite alongside Infantino, Spain’s king, Felipe VI, Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, and Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. The US secretary of state Marco Rubio was also in attendance. Trump was seen conversing with Carney at one point in the second half.
Despite being shown on video screens at the stadium after the US national anthem, and scattered boos from some in the crowd, the most significant hostile reception occurred when he descended to the field to present the trophy. The majority of the crowd booed and jeered as he, Infantino, and other heads of state presented the World Cup trophy to Spain’s captain, Rodri.
Fifa’s official social media accounts, following Spain’s World Cup victory, appeared to crop out Trump and Infantino from pictures depicting the Spanish team holding the trophy on stage at MetLife Stadium. However, the White House later shared a series of pictures that prominently featured the president, with two of these pictures focusing solely on him, while only two included the Spanish team.
Spain’s victory marked their first World Cup title since 2010.
