Newcastle United appoints Matthias Jaissle as new head coach
Newcastle United has announced the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as the club’s new head coach. The 38-year-old German arrives on Tyneside following successful tenures with Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli. His first competitive match in charge is scheduled against Liverpool on Sunday, 23 August.
Jaissle expressed his honour at becoming head coach of what he described as “one of the biggest clubs in European football.” He stated that his teams are built on togetherness, hard work, intensity, and a passion for daily improvement, believing in the enormous potential within the squad and the club.
A New Era on Tyneside
The appointment follows a comprehensive recruitment process, during which Jaissle emerged as the leading candidate. David Hopkinson, Newcastle United’s CEO, highlighted Jaissle as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches, noting his track record of success, leadership qualities, and relentless drive for improvement as an exceptional fit for the club.
Ross Wilson, the club’s sporting director, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Jaissle’s leadership style and football philosophy align strongly with the club’s sporting vision. Wilson added that Jaissle’s teams play high-energy football and that his passion was evident throughout the recruitment discussions. His ability to improve players, build cohesive teams, and create elite performance environments has been a hallmark of his coaching career.
Jaissle’s arrival marks a new chapter for Newcastle United, with the club aiming to build on strong foundations. He has already begun his role, joining the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain at the weekend. His coaching team is expected to be announced shortly.
The new head coach faces the task of succeeding Eddie Howe, who led the club to an EFL Cup victory in 2025 and multiple Champions League qualifications. Howe’s tenure saw the club rise from relegation concerns to securing silverware. However, the previous season concluded with a 12th-place finish in the league, and the departure of key players such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. Additionally, club captain Bruno Guimaraes is set to join Arsenal.
Coaching Philosophy and Player Development
Jaissle’s remit includes developing players and enabling the club to outperform those with larger wage bills. His coaching approach is expected to demand high intensity from the squad, similar to his predecessor. Former Salzburg midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic recalled Jaissle’s demanding nature, noting that he would address any player not giving their all during intense small-sided games.
Jaissle’s teams are known for their high-pressing 4-4-2 formation when opponents build from the back. Even when operating in a mid-block, his sides demonstrate an understanding of when to transition into a collective high press. This tactical approach aligns with the principles previously established under Howe, potentially easing the players’ adaptation to Jaissle’s methods.
At Red Bull Salzburg, Jaissle achieved immediate success, securing a domestic double in his first season. He also guided the club to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages for the first time in their history in 2022, before securing a second consecutive league title and further European progress in the UEFA Europa League. Following his departure, Red Bull Salzburg has not won the league.
His time at Al-Ahli showcased his adaptability, as he transformed the team into a leading force in Asia, securing qualification for the AFC Champions League in his first season. He then led the club to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles, becoming the first coach to achieve this feat. During his tenure at Al-Ahli, his team exhibited strong defensive foundations, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Saudi Pro League last season.
Merih Demiral, a defender who played under Jaissle at Al-Ahli, highlighted the coach’s unwavering belief in his players, even when facing significant deficits. Demiral noted that Jaissle’s mindset was a key factor in the team’s ability to stage comebacks and win matches. Jaissle also brings a team of coaches and analysts, who played a significant role in his previous successes by paying close attention to detail and ensuring thorough preparation.
While Jaissle has not previously coached in the Premier League, his ability to adapt his coaching principles to different player profiles, as demonstrated at Al-Ahli, will be crucial. The Newcastle United squad, which has seen its average age decrease significantly this summer, will still rely on experienced players like Dan Burn and Fabian Schar. Jaissle’s first competitive game is against Liverpool on Sunday, 23 August.
