Wigan’s young stand-ins secure victory over Warrington
Wigan Warriors secured a victory against Warrington Wolves, with young players stepping up to fill gaps left by injuries. The win moves Wigan to within two points of Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos. The match saw Josh Cartwright, Taylor Kerr, Kian McDermott, and Austin Daniel all score their first senior tries, demonstrating the depth of talent within the club’s academy system.
The game was played amidst a significant injury crisis for Wigan, with almost a dozen first-team regulars sidelined. Among those missing was star full-back Jai Field, who was ruled out on the morning of the match due to a back injury. Cartwright, who had only made two previous Super League appearances, was drafted into the squad at the last minute to replace Field.
Early Challenges and Resilience
Despite the challenges, Wigan showed resilience after initially falling behind. Warrington took an early lead, with Albert Hopoate scoring a try and 18-year-old Ewan Irwin also crossing the try-line. Irwin’s early control of the game was notable, including a pass that led to Hopoate’s try and a subsequent score where he broke through the Wigan defence.
The visitors’ strong start saw them establish a 12-0 lead. However, Wigan began to turn the tide as the first half progressed. A period of sustained pressure on the Warrington line resulted in multiple penalties against the Wolves, leading to James Bentley being sent to the sin-bin for persistent infringements. Wigan capitalised on the numerical advantage, with Cartwright scoring a sharp try to halve the deficit.
Cartwright‘s try, following clever build-up play from Harry Smith, marked his third appearance for Wigan and his first Super League try. The conditions of the game appeared to affect both sides as half-time approached, with clear-cut scoring opportunities becoming less frequent. Jake Wardle came close to scoring for Wigan, while Oli Partington made a crucial tackle to deny Max Wood at the other end.
Second Half Momentum Shift
Wigan emerged from the break with renewed vigour, levelling the scores within three minutes of the restart. Taylor Kerr, a 19-year-old loose forward who debuted this season, showcased impressive footwork to score the equalising try. Adam Keighran‘s conversion brought the score to 12-12.
Warrington briefly regained the lead when Kaide Ellis committed a high tackle on Irwin, who then converted the resulting penalty to put the Wolves back in front. However, the momentum had shifted firmly in Wigan’s favour. Harry Smith’s pass created an opening for Zach Eckersley, who slid over for his 16th Super League try of the season, giving Wigan their first lead of the match.

Warrington responded once more, with Matty Ashton scoring his 99th try for the club after a pass from Leon Hayes, bringing the score to 18-18. However, Wigan continued to press. McDermott forced his way over from close range after a touch back from Daniel following Keighran‘s high kick, re-establishing a six-point lead for Wigan.
A potential second try for Irwin was disallowed after a video review confirmed a knock-on. Wigan then sealed their victory with approximately five minutes remaining, as another quick attack culminated in Daniel scoring in the corner. Keighran maintained a perfect record with five successful kicks from five attempts, rounding off a strong performance.

The match was officiated by Marcus Griffiths. The Wigan Warriors squad included Cartwright, Eckersley, O’Loughlin, Wardle, Daniel, Keighran, Smith, Havard, O’Neill, McDermott, Mason, Partington, and Ellis, with Thompson, Mago, Kerr, and O’Connor as interchanges. For Warrington Wolves, the lineup featured Webster, Hopoate, J. Smith, King, Ashton, Irwin, Hayes, Thomas, Walker, Byrne, Bentley, Harrison, and Currie, with Sipley, Wood, Hartill, and Tanginoa as interchanges.
