Stokes’ Test Career Concludes

Ben Stokes, the all-rounder, has retired from Test cricket, playing his final match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. His last appearance saw him as an opener, though he ultimately departs the Test arena having previously batted at number 7. This shift occurred at the beginning of the New Zealand series, a move Stokes explained was partly to benefit England‘s keeper-batter, Jamie Smith. At the time, Stokes hinted at his impending retirement, noting his age and Smith‘s longer career ahead.

His final Test match concluded with England suffering a 160-run defeat to New Zealand, resulting in a 2-1 series victory for the visitors. This loss marked England‘s seventh Test defeat in nine matches, a sequence that includes a loss to India at The Oval and a challenging Ashes campaign.

Throughout his career, Stokes demonstrated a unique playing style. In 2019, during a match at Headingley, he scored two runs off his initial 66 balls before accelerating to an unbeaten 135. That same summer, he achieved a half-century in the World Cup final at Lord’s, with 34 runs coming off his subsequent 17 balls. His ability to make batting appear challenging before executing a remarkable shot was a hallmark of his game.

Performance and Impact

In his final year, Stokes recorded five-wicket hauls against India and Australia, securing 34 Test wickets at an average of 25. His 14th and final century came on a pitch at Old Trafford. However, he did not achieve significant breakthroughs in the Ashes, concluding the series with a strike rate of 37.

During his captaincy, Stokes‘ role as a leader in a significant cricketing experiment became more prominent. There was a period where his bowling contributions seemed to diminish, with his body showing signs of wear. He did not bowl in seven consecutive Tests across 2023 and 2024. Despite this, following hamstring surgery, he made a late return to bowling, ultimately surpassing Bob Willis for the most Test wickets as an England captain.

His prime period is often identified as 2019-2020, during which he developed a reputation for extraordinary performances. He was named player of the series against Australia at home and later against South Africa away. Over a two-year span, Stokes maintained a Test batting average exceeding 50 and a bowling average below 30.

Historically, Stokes‘ first Test century, achieved as a 22-year-old on a challenging Waca pitch against Mitchell Johnson during the 2013/14 Ashes tour, remains a notable moment. Early in his career, his defence required development, and he spent some time batting at number 8. After 20 Tests, his bowling average was over 40, while his batting average was under 30. Amidst this, he still managed to take six-wicket hauls in the Ashes at Trent Bridge and Sydney, demonstrating his skill in moving the ball away from left-handed batsmen.

In shorter formats, Stokes‘ bowling was less central to England‘s strategy, particularly during a difficult period against the West Indies in 2016. While he found a settled role at number 5 in Eoin Morgan’s 50-over team, his position in the 20-over side was less consistent. Notably, his sole T20 international half-century occurred in a World Cup final in Melbourne, where he was part of the 2022 squad.

Future with Durham and Coach’s Comments

Stokes has not participated in white-ball cricket for the past two years, dedicating his efforts entirely to the longer format. He has expressed his intention to continue playing for Durham, indicating a new phase in his career at the county level.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell expressed his appreciation for Stokes‘ positive remarks about the club. Stokes had previously spoken about enjoying his time playing for Durham in a County Championship game against Northamptonshire, which he said reignited his passion for the sport. Campbell stated that every player at Durham was flattered by Stokes‘ comments and his anticipation of returning to play with them.

Campbell and the Durham players learned of Stokes‘ decision during their T20 victory over Middlesex on Sunday. The coach has since communicated with Stokes regarding his availability for Durham in the One-Day Cup, especially since he is not affiliated with a team in The Hundred. With six rounds remaining in the County Championship, which resumes in August, Durham currently holds a 32-point lead at the top of Division Two.

Campbell anticipates that Stokes will feature in both the One-Day Cup and some Championship matches for Durham. Despite some speculation about a potential return to England duty for next summer’s Ashes, Campbell is confident that Stokes‘ nearly 15-year international career has concluded. With over 7,000 Test runs and 258 wickets, Stokes leaves the game recognized as a significant all-rounder.

Campbell believes that Stokes‘ heart will be content, having given his all for England. He encouraged everyone to appreciate Stokes‘ contributions and celebrate him as one of the greatest all-rounders in the sport’s history. Jacques Kallis is noted as the only other player to achieve more than 250 wickets and 7,000 runs in Tests.

The final Test match between England and New Zealand concluded on Monday.

By Harry Sutton — 29 June 2026 — 3 min read

England captain Ben Stokes has confirmed his international retirement, stating he is “done” and will not reverse his decision for next year’s Ashes series. His career concluded on Monday following England‘s defeat by New Zealand in the third Test, which also confirmed a 2-1 series loss for England.

Stokes, who is 35, announced his retirement on Sunday. When questioned about a potential return to play Australia next summer, he told BBC Test Match Special that he is “incredibly content with everything right now” and that the decision was not taken lightly, having required considerable thought. He reiterated his certainty regarding his retirement.

The all-rounder’s international career spanned 15 years, encompassing 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals, and 43 T20s. Following England‘s 160-run defeat, Stokes remained composed, exchanging embraces with opposition players and briefly acknowledging the crowd after his post-match interviews.

Reflecting on a distinguished career

Stokes‘ career is marked by significant achievements, placing him in a statistical category alongside cricketing legends such as Sir Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis. He has accumulated 7,273 Test runs and taken 252 wickets. Beyond statistics, Stokes is remembered for numerous impactful moments, including his performances at Lord’s and Headingley in 2019, and at Melbourne in 2022. He also played a pivotal role in England‘s 50-over World Cup triumph in 2019 and the T20 title in 2022.

His influence as a match-altering all-rounder extended longer than predecessors like Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff, a notable feat given his participation across all three formats of the game. Stokes‘ captaincy, which began in 2022, saw England secure 24 wins from 44 matches, a higher win rate than any captain since Mike Brearley. He is credited, alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, with revitalising English cricket after a period of poor form and Covid restrictions.

The concept of “Bazball,” a style of aggressive and entertaining Test cricket, challenged conventional perceptions of the game. However, Stokes‘ tenure as captain did not culminate in an Ashes victory. The aftermath of the 4-1 Ashes defeat and a subsequent series loss to New Zealand at Trent Bridge contributed to his decision to retire.

Stokes admitted that recent incidents, including being left out of the second Test against the Black Caps due to breaking a team curfew, were a factor in his decision. He stated that the demands of his role over the past six to 12 months had taken their toll, acknowledging the negative aspects despite the honour of the position.

England fans and Ben Stokes Credit: bbc.co.uk

The future of England cricket

The retirement of Stokes leaves a void in the England team, particularly in leadership and the all-rounder role. Head coach Brendon McCullum attempted to persuade Stokes to continue when informed of his plans on Sunday. McCullum expressed sadness at Stokes‘ departure, highlighting their close working relationship over four years and describing Stokes as an inspiration and a good friend.

The departure of Stokes follows a series of retirements from other world-class England players over the past three years, including James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, and Moeen Ali. Joe Root remains the only active England Test player who has experienced an Ashes series victory from the era of former coach Andy Flower.

Regarding the captaincy, Stokes has expressed his full backing for Harry Brook, whose challenge will be to demonstrate the maturity required to lead the Test team. The balance of the playing XI will also need addressing, particularly concerning the all-rounder position, with potential candidates like Rehan Ahmed or Sam Curran being considered. The decision Stokes finalised on Saturday leaves England facing a future they had hoped to delay.

McCullum‘s position as head coach will also face scrutiny, though he has affirmed his commitment to English cricket and his belief in the team’s direction. He stated that the team would continue to evolve and improve, maintaining its identity. Stokes‘ retirement marks the end of an era defined by his impactful moments and leadership.

England captain Ben Stokes has confirmed he will not reverse his international retirement, stating he is "done". His decision follows suggestions he might return for next year’s Ashes series. Stokes, 35, announced his retirement on Sunday, with his international career concluding on Monday after England’s defeat by New Zealand in the third Test.

When asked about a potential return to play Australia next summer, Stokes expressed contentment with his decision, describing it as one not taken lightly and the result of considerable thought. He affirmed his certainty regarding the retirement.

Stokes’ retirement and team performance

Stokes’ international career spanned 15 years, during which he played in 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals, and 43 T20s. Head coach Brendon McCullum attempted to persuade Stokes to continue when informed of his plans on Sunday.

England’s 160-run defeat on Monday confirmed a 2-1 series loss to New Zealand. This marks England’s first home Test series defeat in a contest of three or more matches since 2012. Stokes remained composed after the match, exchanging embraces with opposition players and acknowledging the crowd.

The all-rounder had previously stated on Sunday that retirement was the "best thing" for him. On Monday, he further elaborated that recent incidents, including being left out of the second Test against the Black Caps for breaching team curfew, contributed to his decision. He noted that the demands of his role over the past six to twelve months had taken a toll.

Stokes, who had previously reversed a white-ball retirement to participate in the 2023 World Cup, provided some of England’s most memorable moments during his career. These include his unbeaten century against Australia at Headingley in 2019 and his contribution to England’s victory in the 50-over World Cup final at Lord’s earlier that year.

He expressed that he would miss various aspects of the game, acknowledging it as part of getting older, while also noting there are some things he would be glad not to have to do anymore.

McCullum’s commitment and team challenges

McCullum’s position as head coach is now under scrutiny following the series defeat. Despite this, the New Zealander has affirmed his commitment to remaining in his role, stating his dedication to English cricket has "never wavered."

McCullum and Stokes took charge of England in the spring of 2022, initially winning 11 of their first 13 Tests. However, results have since declined, with Monday’s loss being the seventh in their last nine Tests. McCullum is contracted until the end of 2027.

McCullum reflected on Stokes’ retirement, stating that Stokes had made up his mind, and it became clear he wished to step away. He described the situation as sad, given their close working relationship over four years and the experiences they shared. McCullum called Stokes a good friend and wished him well for the future.

The coach also defended the decision to allow Stokes to open the batting in his final Test innings, explaining it was both a tactical and emotional choice. He believed it offered an opportunity for supporters to show their appreciation for Stokes and for Stokes to have a memorable final walk out onto the field. Tactically, it was intended to make an impact on the total while the pitch was still favourable.

The team’s recent challenges include a 4-1 Ashes defeat. The first Test of the summer against New Zealand saw England win by 115 runs at Lord’s. However, this victory was overshadowed by an incident involving Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who breached a team curfew. The pair were subsequently stood down from the second Test at The Oval, which England lost by 253 runs. They returned for the third Test in Nottingham after being cleared of violent conduct, receiving written warnings for contractual breaches.

McCullum maintains his belief in the team’s direction and its potential for improvement, highlighting the immense talent within the country.

By Harry Sutton — 27 June 2026 — 3 min read

England’s First Innings Collapse

England experienced a significant setback on the third day of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, shifting the momentum in favour of the visitors. Starting the day at 223-2, England had aspirations of building a substantial first-innings lead. However, a disciplined bowling performance from New Zealand led to a collapse, with England being bowled out for 354. This left New Zealand with an 84-run lead in the first innings.

The early part of day three saw Nathan Smith (4-91) and Will O’Rourke (3-53) making crucial breakthroughs for New Zealand. They dismissed Joe Root (21) and Jacob Bethell (74) in consecutive overs, neither of whom could add to their overnight scores. Jamie Smith (1) also fell quickly, contributing to three wickets falling within the first six overs of play. Root was pinned lbw by Smith, while Bethell poked at a ball sliding across him.

Harry Brook (58) and captain Ben Stokes (15) attempted to stabilise the innings, forming a 56-run partnership. However, Stokes’s struggle with the bat continued, and he was eventually bowled by Zak Foulkes (3-35). Foulkes, who came in as a concussion substitute, made a significant impact, also dismissing Brook after he reached a 66-ball fifty. Brook’s half-century was noted as the slowest of his Test career. The dismissals of Brook and Stokes set the stage for England to be all out for 354.

New Zealand Extends Lead

Despite a fiery spell from Jofra Archer (2-14) that saw him claim two quick wickets in New Zealand’s second innings, the visitors managed to extend their lead. Archer’s performance reduced New Zealand to 12-2, but an unbroken 69-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra (60no) and Daryl Mitchell (26no) helped solidify their position. By the close of play, New Zealand had reached 120-3, establishing a lead of 204 runs.

Archer’s impactful bowling included the dismissals of Tom Latham (4) and Devon Conway (5). His removal of Conway was particularly notable, occurring shortly after a delivery struck Conway on the helmet. Gus Atkinson also contributed with a wicket, nicking off Henry Nicholls (16). However, Ravindra and Mitchell’s stand proved resilient, with Ravindra moving fluently and finding boundaries early on.

Rachin Ravindra’s unbeaten 60 settled New Zealand’s second innings.Photograph: Philip Brown/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

The pitch conditions at Trent Bridge changed considerably on day three, offering more seam movement and inconsistent bounce, in contrast to the flatter surface of the first two days. This shift in conditions contributed to the fall of 11 wickets throughout the day. New Zealand’s ability to adapt and build their lead places them in a strong position heading into day four.

Outlook for Day Four

New Zealand’s strong performance on day three means they are well-placed to push for a series victory. The partnership between Ravindra and Mitchell will be crucial as they aim to further extend their lead. For England, securing the remaining wickets quickly will be paramount to keep their hopes alive in the match and the series.

The match is part of a series where England won the First Test at Lord’s by 115 runs, and New Zealand won the Second Test at The Kia Oval by 253 runs. Day four of the third Test between England and New Zealand is scheduled to be broadcast live from 10.15am on Sunday, with the first ball at 11am.

Ireland’s Historic Win

Ireland achieved a significant milestone in T20 international cricket, securing their first senior international victory against India, the reigning world champions. The match, held at Stormont in Belfast, saw Ireland claim a 34-run win in the opening T20 international. This triumph marks the end of Ireland’s winless streak against India in the shorter format, coming at the ninth attempt, and their 12th overall across all formats.

The hosts posted a total of 182-9 after being asked to bat first. Captain Lorcan Tucker led the batting effort with a half-century. In response, India were dismissed for 148 with seven balls remaining in their innings.

Debutants Shine for Ireland

Despite missing key bowlers due to injury, Ireland’s debutants played a crucial role in their historic win. Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra, both fast bowlers, were instrumental in restricting India’s chase. Hollard, named player of the match, recorded figures of 3-28, while Moondra contributed with two wickets.

Hollard expressed his delight, stating that making his debut against India was a dream come true. He mentioned his family’s journey from Johannesburg to support him and acknowledged the support from Cricket Ireland since his move in 2019, which was delayed by Covid-19 setbacks. Moondra, who is India-born, also made a significant impact, including taking a wicket with his very first delivery in international cricket.

Image caption,Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra starred for Ireland on debut Credit: bbc.co.uk

Ireland’s bowling coach, Ryan Eagleson, praised Moondra’s performance, highlighting his pace, left-arm option, and strategic bowling. Eagleson noted Moondra’s ability to know when to bowl a bouncer, use his three-quarter seam, and vary his pace, calling his debut performance outstanding.

Match Details and Key Moments

The match at Stormont drew over 4,000 spectators, many of whom were anticipating a potential record-breaking debut for India’s 15-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, India opted to hold him in reserve and chose to bowl first after winning the toss.

India made a quick start to their chase, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 50 runs off 20 balls. However, Ireland’s bowlers maintained their composure. Moondra dismissed opener Sanju Samson with his first ball in international cricket, setting an early tone. After Sharma’s dismissal by Liam McCarthy, Hollard took crucial wickets, including those of Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, and Washington Sundar, disrupting India’s middle order.

The Ireland team for the match included Tim Tector, Ross Adair, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (Captain, Wicket Keeper), Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Liam McCarthy, Matthew Humphreys, Jai Moondra, and Matt Hollard. India’s lineup featured Sanju Samson (Wicket Keeper), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.

The decisive moment came when Tim Tector caught Arshdeep Singh’s hit off a delivery from Matthew Humphreys, securing the spinner’s third wicket and sealing Ireland’s memorable victory. The fast bowlers, Moondra and Hollard, bowled with notable pace, with Moondra clocked at 88mph and Hollard around 85mph. Their astute bowling, targeting the larger square boundaries, proved effective on a challenging surface.

The two sides are scheduled to face each other again at Stormont on Sunday at 13:30 BST.

Ashwani Kumar took four wickets for just 24 runs, propelling the Mumbai Indians to a commanding 99-run victory over the Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. This match showcased Kumar’s exceptional bowling skills, as he helped dismiss the Titans for only 100 runs while they were chasing a target of 200.

The Mumbai Indians’ triumph was marked by their effective bowling strategy, with Kumar’s performance being a standout. His figures of 4 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs not only secured the win but also marked his second four-wicket haul in the IPL. In total, Ashwani Kumar has now taken 15 wickets in just 8 IPL matches, averaging an impressive 17.06.

Yet, his economy rate of 10.44 indicates room for improvement as he continues to develop his skills in this competitive league. In T20 matches overall, Kumar has claimed 25 wickets from 21 games, showcasing his potential as a key player for his team.

The match itself was a stark contrast to what observers might have expected from the Gujarat Titans, who struggled significantly against the Mumbai bowling attack. The Titans were unable to build any substantial partnerships and collapsed under pressure.

This performance by Ashwani Kumar is particularly notable given the high stakes of IPL matches. With each wicket taken, he not only contributes to his team’s success but also enhances his reputation as an emerging talent in cricket.

As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching how Kumar builds on this momentum. His ability to maintain consistency will be crucial for the Mumbai Indians as they aim for playoff contention.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential injuries or changes within either team following this match. For now, Ashwani Kumar stands out as a player to watch in the ongoing IPL season.
