First Half Action in Toronto

The World Cup 2026 last 32 fixture between Portugal and Croatia in Toronto saw an active first half, with both teams creating opportunities. Early in the match, Portugal had a significant chance. A long ball was kept in play and recycled, leading to Bruno Fernandes taking a shot from a tight angle. The rebound stayed in play, requiring a timely intervention from Croatia to concede only a corner. Another instance saw João Cancelo cross the ball, which nearly resulted in a redirection towards the net by either Cristiano Ronaldo or Fernandes.

Croatia‘s goalkeeper, Dominik Livaković, was active, collecting a cross and attempting to initiate a break with Luka Modrić. However, Modrić‘s pass lacked precision. Portugal maintained possession for periods, with Croatia often dropping players into their penalty area to defend against the Portuguese attack. Despite the defensive efforts, Portugal continued to work the ball effectively.

There were moments of contention regarding fouls. Kovačić caught Nuno Mendes on the foot after the ball was gone, leading to a legitimate free-kick for Portugal, which Ronaldo prepared to take from a distance. Later, Rúben Dias committed a foul on Ante Budimir just past midfield. Croatia also earned another free-kick when Josip Šutalo was fouled.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić fight for the ball during in an entertaining opening half in Toronto.Photograph: Kamil Krzaczyński/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Croatia faced pressure, with Marin Pongračić forced into a dangerous header towards his own goal, managing to put it wide for a corner rather than risking an own goal. On another occasion, Pongračić headed the ball out for a corner instead of a throw-in. Portugal‘s Vitinha subsequently headed the ball over the bar from the resulting corner.

Veteran Players on Display

The match featured two prominent veteran players, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Luka Modrić of Croatia, both born in 1985. These players are among those with the most World Cup appearances in history and have previously won multiple Champions League titles together. Modrić‘s manager, Zlatko Dalić, indicated that this is Modrić‘s final World Cup appearance.

Ronaldo, known for being the record scorer in international football, has previously scored in six World Cups, including a brace against Uzbekistan. Despite his extensive goal tally, none of his international goals have come in a World Cup knockout match. Portugal‘s journey to this stage saw them as runners-up in their group, leading to their match in Toronto.

Cristiano Ronaldo goes close for the Portuguese.Photograph: Cole Burston/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Modrić‘s tournament began with a penalty concession in a 4-2 defeat to England and an early substitution. However, he showed strong form later in the group stage. Croatia, often slow starters in tournaments, managed to secure second place in their group after being fourth after one game and third after two. The nation, with a population under four million, reached the finals in 2018 and finished third in 2022.

Historical Context and Player Statistics

Both Ronaldo and Modrić have demonstrated remarkable longevity in their careers. Only four players have made 200 appearances in senior international football. Ronaldo and Modrić have played 25 and 22 World Cup games, respectively, but have not faced each other in the competition. They have shared the pitch in 232 matches, with 222 of those for Real Madrid and 10 as opponents.

Modrić was named the best player in the 2018 tournament, winning the Golden Ball, and was the third finest in 2022. In 2018, he also received the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA best player award, succeeding Ronaldo. Ronaldo was the runner-up and among those who voted for Modrić. They were teammates at the Bernabéu for six years, during which Real Madrid won four Champions League titles. Ronaldo scored three goals in those finals and became Real Madrid‘s record scorer with 450 goals. Modrić remained at the Bernabéu for an additional seven years, securing two more Champions League titles before his departure a few months before his 40th birthday.

Historically, Modrić has not been on the winning side against Ronaldo when they have played in opposition. The outcome of this match could determine whether Modrić concludes his World Cup career or if Ronaldo‘s pursuit of the competition’s title, spanning two decades, comes to an end.

By Harry Sutton — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

Altitude challenge for England

England are set to face Mexico in a World Cup 2026 last-16 fixture, with head coach Thomas Tuchel highlighting the significant challenge posed by playing at high altitude. The match is scheduled for Monday, 6 July, at 01:00 BST, at Mexico City‘s Azteca Stadium, which is approximately 7,200ft above sea level.

Tuchel stated that the team will not have sufficient time to physically adapt to the thinner air before the game. He explained that adaptation to such altitudes typically requires a week or two for athletes to acclimatise and increase red blood cell production. However, England is expected to arrive in Mexico City only two days prior to the match.

Mexico, in contrast, has played all four of their World Cup games at high altitude, including three matches at the Azteca Stadium and one in Guadalajara, which is around 5,000ft above sea level. This experience means their players are already accustomed to the conditions, providing them with a considerable advantage, according to Tuchel.

The lower barometric pressure at high altitude results in less oxygen being taken into the bloodstream with each breath, which can create difficulties for athletes. Tuchel acknowledged this as a major obstacle but expressed confidence in his team’s readiness to deal with the situation.

England secured their spot in the last-16 after Harry Kane scored a brace against DR Congo, leading to their trip to Mexico City.

Match details and ticket information

The highly anticipated knockout match between Mexico and England will take place at the Estadio Azteca. This fixture marks a significant encounter in the tournament’s Round of 16.

For fans looking to attend, the major official World Cup ticket lotteries, including the Visa Presale, Early Ticket Draw, and the post-draw Random Selection Draw, have concluded. Over 500 million requests were processed during these phases, leading to very low primary ticket availability.

The Last-Minute Sales Phase commenced on April 1, offering tickets on a first-come, first-served basis with immediate confirmation. This phase represents the final opportunity to purchase official tickets directly from FIFA. Additionally, the Official FIFA Resale Marketplace is operational, serving as an authorised platform for fans to buy and sell verified tickets at regulated prices.

Alternatively, fans might explore secondary marketplaces for last-minute tickets, though it is advised to review the terms and conditions of such sites.

FIFA has implemented variable pricing for the 2026 tournament. Tickets for the Group Stage were available for specific Supporter Tiers, while prices for the Final have been noted to reach higher figures, with secondary marketplaces potentially exceeding these amounts.

Tuchel’s message and team outlook

Tuchel addressed the pressure associated with England’s long wait for another World Cup victory, stating that he did not perceive it as a factor in his side’s recent performance. He indicated that the team displayed a strong attitude and readiness to face challenges.

The match against Mexico is scheduled to kick off at 01:00 BST. When asked about children watching the late-night game, Tuchel humorously suggested that parents should write an excuse for school, emphasising the rarity of the World Cup, which occurs every four years, and the importance of fan support.

The England versus Mexico match is set to be broadcast live across various platforms.

Kane’s decisive performance

Harry Kane delivered a pivotal performance for England in their World Cup 2026 last-32 match against DR Congo, scoring two late goals to secure a 2-1 victory. The win, described as a dramatic rescue, prevented what was threatening to be a significant upset for England. The match took place in Atlanta, under the roof of a futuristic stadium, where conditions were cool and breezy, a contrast to the city’s usual heat and humidity.

DR Congo initially took a shock lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga, putting England behind for much of the game. However, Kane equalised with a header in the 75th minute, beating goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. He then scored the decisive winning goal in the 86th minute, following a pass from substitute Anthony Gordon, who was involved in both goals.

This comeback was met with an explosion of celebration and relief from the England squad and fans. The victory ensures England‘s progression to the last 16 of the tournament. The result also brought relief to head coach Thomas Tuchel and the Football Association, who had placed significant faith in him to lead the team in this competition.

Reactions and future challenges

The dramatic win sparked reactions from various figures, including Prince William, who jokingly remarked that the victory was “never in doubt.” Liam Gallagher, frontman of Oasis, also acknowledged the win on social media. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer suggested that the win could lead to England winning the World Cup.

Fans in Atlanta expressed a mix of relief and excitement. Dave Simmons, a supporter from Penrith, Cumbria, described himself as “shot to pieces” after the nervy win, highlighting the stressful nature of watching England play. Another fan, Spencer Dalby from Huddersfield, noted that England often struggles to find belief early in matches but becomes unstoppable once they do.

Fans watch a screening of the England match at Boxpark Wembley in London(Steven Paston/PA) Credit: independent.co.uk

Kane‘s performance has further cemented his status as a key player for England. He now has five goals in this World Cup, placing him in contention for the Golden Boot alongside players like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Lionel Messi. Tuchel praised Kane, calling him a leader who decides matches with his finishing ability. Kane‘s two goals in this knockout stage match mark the first time an England player has achieved this since Gary Lineker in 1990.

Kane‘s career statistics continue to impress, with 84 goals for England, putting him level with Ferenc Puskas on the all-time international scorers list. He has also moved above Pele to become joint sixth on the all-time World Cup scorers list. This season, Kane has scored for both club and country.

Teammates like Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon lauded Kane‘s consistency and leadership. Bellingham stated he would look back at Kane as an inspiration, while Gordon highlighted Kane‘s phenomenal ability and dedication in training and matches. Kane himself reflected on his childhood dream of playing in the World Cup, aiming to lead by example for younger generations.

Looking ahead to Mexico City

England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. This presents a significant challenge, as Mexico has a strong home record, having lost only two of their past 89 competitive games there. Their record at the stadium includes 70 wins and 10 unbeaten World Cup matches.

The team will also contend with the high altitude of over 7,000 feet in Mexico City, a contrast to their previous matches in enclosed stadiums in Dallas and Atlanta, and in cooler conditions in Boston and New York New Jersey Stadium. The atmosphere is expected to be hostile, with passionate local support. England‘s most recent World Cup memory at the Azteca Stadium is their 1986 quarter-final defeat against Argentina.

Harry Kane addresses his England teammates after their dramatic comeback in Atlanta.Photograph: Joosep Martinson/Fifa/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Despite concerns about England‘s performance in the first half against DR Congo, some fans remain optimistic about their chances against Mexico. Tony Woods from St Helens believes England will win, predicting a 2-1 scoreline, while acknowledging some worries after watching Mexico play. The match against Mexico is scheduled for Sunday.

By Harry Sutton — 28 June 2026 — 3 min read

Scotland have been eliminated from the World Cup 2026 after failing to progress beyond the group stage, with manager Steve Clarke announcing his resignation. The confirmation came following Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana, which meant Scotland could not secure a spot as one of the eight best third-placed teams to advance to the knockout phase.

Clarke, who had been in charge for seven years, stepped down shortly after the final whistle of the match that sealed Scotland’s fate. This marks another group-stage exit from a major tournament for the national side, which has participated in nine World Cups and four European Championships without ever moving past the initial phase.

Tournament Performance and Elimination

Scotland began their first World Cup appearance in 28 years with a 1-0 win against Haiti, the lowest-ranked team in their group. However, subsequent matches proved more challenging. A 1-0 defeat to Morocco was followed by a 3-0 loss to Brazil in Miami.

The defeat against Brazil left Scotland with three points and a goal difference of minus three, placing them third in Group C. Following this match, Clarke and some players acknowledged that progression to the last 32 was unlikely, leading to a period of waiting for results from other groups.

The team’s only goal of the tournament came from John McGinn’s deflected strike against Haiti, marking the country’s first World Cup win in 36 years. This initial victory was supported by thousands of travelling fans in the United States.

In their second match, Scotland lost to a second-minute goal from 2022 semi-finalists Morocco. Entering their final group game against Brazil, a draw was anticipated to be sufficient for them to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

However, defensive errors in the first half proved costly against Brazil. Vinicius Jr. scored the opener after Scott McKenna lost possession in his own penalty area. Although a second goal from Vinicius Jr. was initially disallowed by VAR for a foul on Jack Hendry, he scored again just before half-time after Scotland gave the ball away near their own goal, making it 2-0.

Matheus Cunha extended Brazil’s lead after the break, and a late rally from Scotland failed to produce a goal that would have improved their goal difference. Results from other groups, including Ecuador’s comeback win against Germany, further diminished Scotland’s chances of progressing.

Scott McTominay walks off the pitch after the demoralising defeat against Brazil in Scotland’s third group match in Miami.Photograph: Ian MacNicol/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Clarke’s Departure and Legacy

Steve Clarke’s resignation was announced by the Scottish FA shortly after Croatia’s win confirmed Scotland’s exit. Players were informed of the decision while still at their training base in Charlotte.

In a letter to supporters, Clarke expressed his gratitude to his players, stating, “The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.” He added that it was an honour to be their Gaffer and wished his successor well.

Clarke took over as head coach seven years ago, during a period when Scotland had not reached a major finals since the World Cup in 1998. Under his leadership, the team qualified for two European Championships before securing their spot in this summer’s World Cup.

Despite these qualification successes, Scotland underperformed in all three tournaments, with the recent win against Haiti being their only victory across these finals. Clarke had been critical of the team’s performance after the Brazil defeat, stating, “We have to be better if we want to compete at this level.”

While Clarke’s position was reportedly secure, with a four-year contract signed before the World Cup, his departure marks the end of an era. Scotland will return to action in September, facing Slovenia and Switzerland in the Nations League.

The World Cup 2026 match between Panama and England is underway at New York New Jersey Stadium. The game has seen moments of attacking play from both sides, with England creating several opportunities and Panama showing glimpses of threat on the counter-attack.

Early in the second half, England‘s Jude Bellingham scored, converting a corner from the left. He met the ball at the near post and directed a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

First Half Action and Commentary

The first half saw England pressing Panama, though the Panamanian defence maintained its shape, making it difficult for England to find a clear path to goal. Despite this, England had several attempts. Marcus Rashford, for instance, whipped a cross in from the left, which Harry Kane attempted to poke home from close range. However, Jose Cordoba intervened, kicking the ball against his own player, Andrade, and over the bar.

Rashford also had a shot that rippled the side netting after tearing down the left and into the box, opting to shoot himself rather than pass to Kane. Earlier, Saka made his way into the Panama box from the right, winning England‘s fifth corner of the game, though his subsequent kick did not beat the first defender.

Panama, while largely defensive, did manage to create some moments of concern for England. Jose Luis Rodriguez took advantage of space on the left side of Panama‘s attack, firing a low drive towards the bottom left that required a strong hand from Jordan Pickford to turn around the post. Anderson also had an attempt, curling a powerful shot towards the top right that went high and wide. Harvey swished a shot into the side netting after a quick throw-in down the right.

The match also featured a drinks break, during which various observations were made about the game’s pace. Some commentators noted that England‘s performance did not seem to be a significant improvement on previous regimes, while others suggested the team needed to exert more effort.

There were also some physical moments in the first half. Saka claimed to have been clipped in the area by Gutierrez, but replays showed no contact, and the referee dismissed the penalty appeal. Towards the end of the first half, Kane was fouled by Harvey about 25 yards out from goal.

Second Half Developments

The second half began with a substitution for Panama, as Fajardo replaced Tomas Rodriguez up front. England started the second half with the ball. The early part of the second half saw some stoppages, including O’Reilly accidentally falling on Martinez, who required treatment but was able to continue.

England‘s assistant coach, Anthony Barry, provided some insights into the team’s half-time discussion. He emphasised the team’s focus on their own game and the absence of easy matches in the World Cup. He noted that initial energy might have affected risk management, leading to central ball losses and opening up opportunities for counter-attacks from a dangerous opponent. He also highlighted the need to take care of coverage and counter-attacks while utilising the team’s attacking talent.

As the second half progressed, Panama began to commit more players to attack, seeking opportunities. This, in turn, created more space for England to exploit. Bellingham capitalised on this by making a run down the left and winning a corner, which he subsequently converted into a goal.

However, England also faced a concern when Quansah went over on his ankle. He had also been booked earlier for a challenge on an opponent. This injury concern comes amidst existing issues for England at right-back.

In another Group L match, Croatia led Ghana 1-0 at half-time, thanks to a goal from Petar Sucic. This result, as it stood at half-time, would mean Croatia would win the group, and England would face Portugal in the last 32. However, the final matches in other groups, including Portugal‘s, were yet to kick off.

At the 55-minute mark, Rashford again attempted a shot on goal, which hit the side netting.

By Harry Sutton — 27 June 2026 — 4 min read

Norway’s Strategic Changes and Match Outcome

Norway made significant changes to their starting lineup for their final group stage match against France in the World Cup 2026, opting to rest key players including Erling Haaland. This decision resulted in a 4-1 defeat for Norway at Boston Stadium, with Ousmane Dembele scoring a hat-trick for France within 25 minutes of the first half. France‘s victory secured their top position in Group I, marking their third win in three matches. Desire Doue added a fourth goal for France.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken implemented 10 changes to the team, a move he described as a “no-brainer” given that his side had already qualified for the knockout stages. The decision was influenced by discussions with the medical department and some players, who were reportedly affected after their previous game against Senegal. Ian Wright, a former England striker, suggested before the match that if Haaland needed rest for later stages of the tournament, he would take it.

Despite the changes, Norway had an opportunity to narrow the deficit when Jorgen Strand Larsen, who started in place of Haaland, missed a penalty that could have made the score 3-2 after half-time. Haaland had previously scored four goals in the two preceding group games, including two in a 3-2 win against Senegal.

Implications for Knockout Stages and Travel

The outcome of the match means France will play their last-32 fixture at the New York New Jersey Stadium on 30 June against the runners-up of Group F or G. Conversely, Norway faces a longer journey for their next game, travelling approximately 1,100 miles from Greensboro, North Carolina, to Arlington, Texas, to play Ivory Coast on the same day. Had Norway topped their group, their travel distance would have been significantly shorter.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin highlighted the complexity of the travel arrangements, noting the “massive distances” involved if a team loses a game and needs to relocate. He also suggested that ensuring players are fit and rested might have been a primary consideration for Norway‘s management. Roy Keane, a former Republic of Ireland midfielder, echoed this sentiment, stating that Norway‘s priority was to advance from the group, and the manager likely viewed the match against France as a difficult prospect, opting to rest players for subsequent games.

France assistant Guy Stephan, who was deputising for Didier Deschamps, indicated that he was not surprised by Norway‘s extensive changes, understanding that Solbakken was preparing for the round of 32. Stephan mentioned that the effectiveness of Norway‘s decision would become clear in four days.

Historical Context and Fan Reaction

Norway‘s decision to make 10 changes to their starting XI for a World Cup match is a notable occurrence. They are only the fourth team to implement such a large number of changes in the same tournament edition. Spain made 11 changes in 2006 against Saudi Arabia and won, but subsequently lost to France in the last 16. In contrast, Belgium made 10 changes in 2018, defeated Japan 3-2, and then went on to beat Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-finals before being eliminated by France.

The strategic move by Solbakken generated some discussion among fans at Boston Stadium. While some expressed surprise, others embraced the moment, performing their Viking-style row celebration. Thousands of Norwegian supporters had travelled to the United States to support their team, and despite the outcome, the atmosphere remained engaged.

France‘s performance, particularly Dembele‘s hat-trick, showcased the depth of their attacking talent. Dembele‘s goals, often involving him cutting inside and striking with his left foot, set an early pace in the match. Kylian Mbappe also contributed with a pass that led to one of Dembele‘s goals. France is the first team since Poland in 1974 to have two players score four goals each in the group stage, with Dembele and Mbappe matching the achievement of Grzegorz Lato and Andrzej Szarmach. This expanded tournament is also the first World Cup to feature five players scoring four or more goals in the group stage.

If Norway defeats Ivory Coast, they will proceed to a last-16 tie on 5 July in New Jersey against the winners of the Brazil-Japan match.

By Harry Sutton — 26 June 2026 — 3 min read

The Netherlands established a two-goal advantage over Tunisia in their World Cup 2026 Group F fixture. The match, held in Kansas City, saw an early own goal from Tunisia‘s Ellyes Skhiri, followed by a strike from Brian Brobbey, marking his third goal of the tournament.

The Dutch side, managed by Ronald Koeman, entered the game aiming to secure the top spot in Group F. Their performance in the first half demonstrated a clear dominance, with two goals scored within the initial ten minutes of play. This early lead significantly eased any pressure on the Netherlands.

First Half Dominance

The opening minutes of the match proved challenging for Tunisia. Just moments after a potential scoring opportunity for Tunisia, a dangerous low cross from Denzel Dumfries on the right flank resulted in Skhiri inadvertently deflecting the ball into his own net, giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, in the seventh minute, Brobbey extended the Dutch lead. A free-kick from Reijnders was headed back across goal by Virgil van Dijk, allowing an unmarked Brobbey to volley the ball home from the back post. This made the score 2-0 early in the game.

Throughout the first half, the Netherlands maintained control, exhibiting patient attacking play and prolonged periods of possession. They registered 12 shots compared to Tunisia‘s 4, and completed 302 passes against their opponent’s 126. This statistical advantage highlighted the Dutch dominance.

Despite the comfortable lead, the Netherlands continued to press for a third goal as half-time approached. Dumfries had an attempt on target after cutting inside, but his left-footed shot was saved by Dahmen. Cody Gakpo also had a chance, but a pass from Reijnders did not allow him to connect effectively.

Ryan Gravenberch also had opportunities, with one shot being deflected for a corner and another going over the crossbar. The Dutch defence, however, allowed a few half-chances for Tunisia, though neither side came close to scoring in the minutes leading up to the hydration break.

The match experienced a hydration break, which was met with boos from the crowd. The weather in Kansas City included moderate rain during the second half, with temperatures holding steady in the low 70s.

Group F Implications and Historical Context

The Netherlands‘ strong performance positions them favourably to win Group F. Their victory, coupled with a draw or defeat for Japan in their concurrent match against Sweden, would secure the top spot. The Dutch will automatically advance with either a win or a draw in this fixture, while Tunisia has been eliminated from the tournament.

Historically, Tunisia had a notable qualifying campaign for this World Cup, becoming the first nation to qualify without conceding a single goal. They won nine and drew one of their qualifying games, scoring 22 goals. However, in the current tournament, they have conceded ten goals and are yet to score.

The Netherlands and Tunisia had previously met three times, all in friendly matches. The Dutch won their first encounter in 1978, with the subsequent two games in 1994 and 2009 ending in draws. This match marks their first competitive fixture.

The current standings in Group F show the Netherlands ahead of Japan on goal difference, with both teams having four points. Sweden is in third place with three points, while Tunisia is at the bottom with zero points and one goal scored.

An almost certain victory for the Netherlands in this match suggests they will likely face Morocco in the round of 32. This potential match-up is expected to generate significant interest, particularly in Dutch-Moroccan communities in cities like Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, given the estimated 430,000 Moroccans residing in the Netherlands, including several members of the Moroccan national squad born in the country.

At half-time, the score remained Tunisia 0-2 Netherlands.

By Harry Sutton — 25 June 2026 — 3 min read

Ivory Coast are set to face Curacao in a World Cup 2026 group stage match at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The fixture, scheduled for Thursday, June 25, will kick off at 9pm BST.

Ivory Coast, known as the Elephants, are looking to secure second place in Group E. Their campaign so far includes a victory over Ecuador in their opening game. They then faced Germany, where they narrowly lost after the European side came from behind to score twice in the second half.

In the match against Germany, Ivory Coast had an opportunity to win when the score was 1-1 in added time, but Simon Adingra was unable to convert. Germany subsequently scored the winning goal. Despite the loss, the performance against Germany demonstrated Ivory Coast‘s ability to compete with strong teams in the tournament.

Curacao, on the other hand, managed to keep their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage alive with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. This performance saw goalkeeper Eloy Room make 15 saves, equalling a record for most saves in a World Cup game. However, Curacao have faced significant pressure in their matches, allowing 27 shots on target in their two games.

Curacao have lost three of their last five games by a three-goal margin and have conceded 11 of their last 15 goals in the second half. They have also allowed 27 shots on target in their two tournament games. Ivory Coast, in contrast, have won four of their last five matches.

For Ivory Coast, coach Emerse Fae, who led the team to an Africa Cup of Nations title in 2023, has made tactical adjustments during the tournament. He began with a 4-4-2 formation, with Manchester United winger Amad Diallo initially on the bench. In the game against Germany, Fae switched to a 4-1-4-1 formation, bringing Amad into the starting lineup and making five other changes.

These changes included bringing in Odilon Kossounou at centre-back and deploying Ibrahima Sangare as a sole defensive midfielder. Inao Oulai partnered Franck Kessie, and Ange-Yoan Bonny played as the lone striker. Amad Diallo replaced Nicolas Pepe on the right wing. These adjustments nearly secured a win against Germany, with Kessie scoring in the first half.

Looking ahead to the match against Curacao, Wilfried Singo is set for a period of rest after avoiding a serious injury in the loss to Germany, though he makes the bench. Guela Doue replaces him at right-back. Amad Diallo is expected to retain his place, and Yan Diomande, who has played on both wings, is also anticipated to feature. Nicolas Pepe is also set to start.

Yahia Fofana, who made several saves against Germany, is expected to remain in goal. Elye Wahi‘s visa issues appear to be resolved, and Evan Ndicka could feature after recovering from a thigh injury. Yan Diomande has created seven chances for his teammates in Ivory Coast‘s first two games and registered nine assists in all competitions for his club side in 2025-26.

For Curacao, Jurgen Locadia sustained a knock against Ecuador and is in a race to prove his fitness. Coach Dick Advocaat is likely to maintain the back five strategy that was effective in their previous game. Juninho Bacuna, typically a midfielder, played in a more advanced role against Ecuador and is considered a key attacking threat for Curacao. He has had four shots in the World Cup, with one on target, and has scored 14 goals in 52 appearances for his country.

The match will be broadcast on BBC Two in the UK. The kick-off is scheduled for 9pm BST on Thursday, June 25.

Group E Showdown in East Rutherford

Ecuador are set to face Germany in a pivotal World Cup 2026 Group E match on Thursday, June 25. The game, kicking off at 9pm BST, will be held at the New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, USA. Germany has already secured the top spot in Group E, while Ecuador requires a victory to advance to the round of 32.

Germany enters the match with a strong record, having won their last 11 games. Their path to securing the group lead included a 7-1 win against Curacao and a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. Ecuador, on the other hand, has not scored in their initial two World Cup matches, drawing 0-0 with Curacao and losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast due to a 90th-minute goal.

For Ecuador, a win against Germany is essential for qualification. A draw would leave them with two points, which would likely not be enough to progress as one of the best third-placed teams. If Ecuador secures a win, they would have four points, significantly improving their chances of advancing.

Team News and Potential Line-ups

Germany, having already qualified, may opt to rest key players. Coach Julian Nagelsmann could bring in fresh talent, including striker Deniz Undav, who is pushing for a start after scoring twice against Ivory Coast. Experienced centre-back Antonio Rudiger and midfielder Leon Goretzka could also be recalled to the starting lineup. However, centre-half Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

Ecuador has no reported injury concerns. Coach Sebastian Beccacece has options to refresh his attacking unit, with Chelsea winger Kendry Paez being a potential choice. Ecuador’s predicted line-up is (3-1-4-2): Galindez; Franco, Pacho, Hincapie; Alcivar; Yeboah, Vite, M Caicedo, Estupinan; Plata, E Valencia. Germany’s predicted line-up is (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Raum; Goretzka, Pavlovic; Leweling, Musiala, Wirtz; Undav.

The match is expected to be open, as Ecuador will be compelled to adopt a more attacking strategy than their usual defensive approach. In World Cup qualifying, La Tri conceded only five goals in 18 matches. However, facing a high-scoring Germany side while needing a win could push them out of their comfort zone. Germany’s recent matches have often seen multiple goals, with over 2.5 goals occurring in eight of their last nine internationals.

Qualification Scenarios for Group E

In Group E, Germany is confirmed as group winners. The other teams, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Curacao, are all vying for qualification. Ivory Coast will play Curacao in their final fixture. If Ivory Coast avoids defeat against Curacao, they will finish as group runners-up, regardless of Ecuador’s result against Germany.

Should Ivory Coast lose to Curacao, Curacao would leapfrog them. If Ecuador then beats Germany, Ivory Coast would be eliminated. However, if Ecuador fails to win, Ivory Coast could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, potentially with three points and a negative goal difference.

For Curacao, a victory against Ivory Coast would be sufficient for qualification, irrespective of other results. Even if Ecuador also wins against Germany, Curacao could still advance in third place with four points. A draw would not be enough for Curacao to progress.

Tie-breaking rules for teams on the same number of points prioritize head-to-head records. If multiple teams are level, a mini-league is formed based on points won in matches between those teams, followed by goal difference and goals scored. Further tie-breakers include the Team Conduct Score, which is based on cards received, and then FIFA ranking.

The match between Ecuador and Germany is scheduled for Thursday, June 25.

In a commanding performance, the Socceroos defeated Curaçao 5-1 in a friendly match held in Melbourne on March 31, 2026. Nestory Irankunda emerged as the standout player, scoring two goals and showcasing his talent on the international stage.

The match saw Awer Mabil score the opening goal for the Socceroos in the 22nd minute, setting the tone for a dominant display. Irankunda, who came on as a substitute in the 66th minute, celebrated his first goal with a backflip and a dance inspired by Michael Jackson, further energizing the crowd.

At just 20 years old, Irankunda has already made a name for himself, becoming Australia’s second-youngest player to score an international goal during a World Cup qualifier against Palestine two years prior. His performance against Curaçao not only highlighted his potential but also his ambition, as he stated, “We want to be that group that goes all the way and potentially wins the World Cup.”

Coach Tony Popovic praised Irankunda’s talent, noting, “He’s young, he’s 20 years old, he’s a wonderful talent and we want him to be happy, want him to enjoy his football, but we also want him to understand that he needs to work.” Popovic also commented on the team’s performance, acknowledging the fatigue that set in during the second half but emphasized the sharper play from the substitutes, which contributed to the victory.

Curaçao, a popular Caribbean destination, has seen an increase in tourist arrivals in recent years, bolstered by the opening of Sandals Royal Curaçao in 2022. This growth in tourism reflects the island’s appeal, which may have been overshadowed by the recent soccer match.

The Socceroos are preparing for the upcoming World Cup, where they will face the USA, Paraguay, and either Kosovo or Turkey in their group stage. Their opening match is scheduled for June 13, 2026, and the team is focused on building momentum leading up to the tournament.

As for the friendly match against Curaçao, the scoreline of 5-1 serves as a strong statement of intent from the Socceroos. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of this match on their World Cup preparations, but it certainly sets a positive tone for the squad as they look ahead to the global stage.
